What size tires do you 17inch Q guys have? 215/55 or what? Also give me a refresher on what those numbers mean? I asked this before on the old NICO site but I guess those old posts aren't included on the search feature, pity. Thanks fellas!!

You'll want wider than that, but I have 16's so I'll let Fred and some of the 17" boys comment. 245/45/17 seems to be the preference.

215 = mm tread width55 = aspect ratio. In this case, the sidewall height (from rim to tread) is 55% of the tread width.

Good to see you again BQ!

I'm ordering 255/45 17's for 97' right after new years when I get my new rims mounted.

"tire size calculator" in Google gives 1700+ results, but this one is good because it gives you a picture comparison.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

For the 90-96 Q, it shows 215/55-17 to be the same diameter as stock, but the problem is almost nobody makes that size, and those that do show it as only about a 93 weight rating. Stock is 95.

You didn't ask, but a 255/50-16, also the right diameter, is a 99. The Michelin Pilot XGT HR in that size is just what the Q needs for a combination of handling, ride and longevity. For my money 16" is the size to use, if you have not already bought the 17" wheels!

Note that the new BMW 745 uses Michelin Primacy Special 245/18 [98 load index] and 275/18 [101 load index] on the rear with a 200 tread wear index. This should give you some idea of what widths and strengths are required to achieve optimum performance on heavy cars.Obviously the 18" is more fashion than anything else since 17" would have worked with 13.7" rotors.
