There are many reasons for going with either size. On my Mini Cooper, I have the stock 16s and a set of summer 17s. Both sets are the same diameter but the 17s look more aggressive. If you're changing rims to change the look, 17s or even 18s are generally accepted as better looking. The stock size of the Versa wheel/tire is actually large for a car it's size. My 99 Integra has tiny wheels in comparison, and are small than the Mini's, which are just a touch smaller than the Versa (I'm referring to overall height.)
If you're after performance, the lighter the wheel, the better the performance. And every pound is very noticeable. A 16" wheel requires a tire with a taller side wall but the size wall is lighter than the rim material. And the mass of the rim is closer to the hub. (The mass of the tire, and it's relative location, is about the same for both tires.) In my case, my 17s are SSR forged wheels and are <13lbs each. When they're on the Mini (non-supercharged) it's very noticeable in the acceleration and the handling. With the 16s, you could go with a shorter sidewall, and thus a shorter tire. This will change the speedo but you'll get less tickets because it will always read high.
If you're worried about comfort, it's not that big of an issue as it was 5 years ago. The low profile tires (<=45) of today come in a variety of stiffnesses. Although, given the same tire, the 16 will ride better. And for any given wheel style, the 16 will be lighter.
In the end, the tire gap and the arc of the tire will be the same as stock, the difference is the tire area to wheel area ratio. There are some good wheels available in both sizes. I suggest the 17s in a lightweight, like the Kosei K1 TS. You'll have the best of all worlds.
