I have a 2014 Rogue SL. I am up for my 15k service, well my current mileage is past 17k. The dealer quoted 280$ and might come down to 240$ with a coupon. So is it recommended to go to a dealer or find a local mechanic aka Firestone or pep boys and get it done there. The list recommended had below:
  • Road test.
Consult III diagnostic scan (ECM, TCM, BCM, IPDM, HARNESS AND ELEC SYSTEMS
    Change engine oil and filter
Replace - air filter, front windshield wiper inserts, in cabin micro filter.
    Rotate tires
Adjust drive belt tension as needed
    Service and Test battery operation
    Test charging and starting sys
Tires check - tread, depth, wear pattern
    Lubricate all hinges
    Windshield wipers
    Fill washer reservoir
    Check and top off fluids
Install engine protection oil supplement (MOA)
    Lubricate prop shaft where applicable
Firstly is all this needed. If yes, how much would most of these cost itemized. There don't seem to be any big OEM parts needed. My driving conditions are mostly local and highways on the weekends.

Off late I have noticed jerks of sorts when breaking from higher speed. Something like pulsed feedback when braking. Is that something to with brake pads?

Welcome to NICO!

Under the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act, you have the right to have the vehicle serviced anywhere you choose. I mention this in case the dealership tries to bully you into letting them do the work.

I'd get estimates from local reputable shops. The majority of the things listed can be handled by yourself, and some are unnecessary (bill padding). Did you notice the windshield wipers were listed twice? If they need to be changed, I'm sure you can manage them yourself. Ditto for the air filters, filling the washer reservoir, and topping off fluids. Adjust drive belt tension as needed? You've only put 15K miles on the car, so unless your belt squeals, that's not necessary. Install engine protection oil supplement (snake oil), um NO.

The only ones I would question on the list is; engine protection supplement (MOA) and lubricating prop shaft. You shouldn't need an oil supplement if you are changing the oil within Nissan's recommended mileage. Oil chg, air filter, cabin filter, tire rotation are all part of what Nissan recommends at this mileage. Wiper blades depend upon use and weather conditions so if there's any concern about them by all means replace them. Adjusting drive belt tension and the other checks/tests are good things to have done for peace of mind and to prevent future problems.

If you have a mechanic (other than the dealer) you trust, have him do it, but make sure you keep all receipts to show Nissan you had the required things done. Costs vary widely by area. so what may be a fair price in one part of the country, might be high or low in another. The most important thing is to have the recommended maintenance done by a competent mechanic, whether at the dealership or an independent shop.

As far as the pulsed feedback when braking, it could be warped rotors. Rotors build up a lot of heat, and if they get sprayed by water when hot, whether when washing the vehicle, or driving through water on the road, it can cause warping even at your mileage.

Rogue One is right, many of things you can do. Otherwise get estimates.

I will start off by agreeing with everyone who will post and say "you can get it done cheaper at an independent shop". For example, most people are capable of changing out the in cabin filter, air filter and wiper blades themselves (and there should be youtube videos for these that specifically pertain to the Rogue). And rotating the tires is doable (but sometimes for the price it's easier to just pay the $20 and have them done at the dealer). The one piece that you and most independent shops cannot do is the CONSULT scan, which is a tool that Nissan has to read through all your sensors.

That said, one of the reasons the dealers love this work is because it can generate more work, and at your mileage, it will typically be under warranty so no cost to you. It is in their best interests to find things to fix, and in your interests as well because they should not come at a cost to you.

Overall - a lot of the work quoted is stuff you should do. You should: change your air filter, change your wiper blades (or at least make sure they aren't streaky), change your in cabin filter, top off your fluids, check your tire wear/depth, rotate your tires and change your oil/filter. Items like the CONSULT scan and charging system check are preventative items, to try and detect problems before they occur.

In regards to your brake problems, you would probably want to look at having your brakes inspected and serviced to maintain their proper operation. There is a video on here from a member for disassembling your brakes to lube the pins, clean them, etc. but I completely understand that is not something everyone is comfortable with.

Appreciate these responses.

@phjake you mentioned to hold to receipts. Is this is needed just in case of warranty issues other than book keeping?

Yes it is. If any warranty issues come up you want to be able to prove to Nissan you had the recommended maintenance done. As mentioned by Rogue One, Nissan can not force you to have recommended maintenance done at the dealer, but they do have the right to refuse a warranty claim if you can't prove it was done by you or another mechanic.

Does that also affect using OEM vs aftermarket parts? For example if I change wiper blades, air filters etc and use something that's not Nissan recommended, will they deny warranty for using a non OEM part?

No. Otherwise places like Pep Boys, Advance Auto Parts, etc. would have been sued out of business ages ago. I've purchased my own oil filters and had the dealership install it rather than the one they offered (plus they deducted the cost of the filter from my bill).

Added bonus on wipers. Most car parts stores will put them on your car free of charge.

Making modifications to the vehicle are what usually kill your warranty. Google search: Car mods that won't void warranty

People actually do the 15k services? Waste of money as far as Im concerned. Check the items that are supposed to be checked and change things as you see fit. At 15k chances are not much needs to be done

My 2013 manual recommends a break fluid change as well @ 15K.

From my manual:
❑ Replace engine oil and filter
❑ Replace brake fluid
❑ Replace in-cabin microfilter1
❑ Rotate tires (except all 370Z)4
❑ Inspect the following:
__ Automatic transmission/CVT fluid3
__ Axle & suspension parts __ Brake lines & cables __ Brake pads, rotors, drums & linings __ Differential oil2 __ Drive shaft boots __ Exhaust system __ Front suspension ball joints __ Manual transmission oil __ Propeller shaft (4WD/AWD/RWD) __ Steering gear and linkage __ Steering linkage ball joints __ Transfer case oil (4WD/AWD)

Break Definition: terminate or shatter.
Examples: break a lucky streak; break a glass.

Brake Definition: a restraint used to slow or stop a vehicle.
Examples: The brakes didn't work so the car crashed. New legislation will put the brakes on spending.

Had to fix this faux pas by the OP as well.

This mistake was simply a compromise of precision in the name of speed.

Concerning the supposed faux pas this mispelling was neither embarrassing, nor tactless. It was just an error.

The subject of the post was 15K maintenance. I just wanted to point out the brake fluid exchange was left off the original posters list. My source is the 2013 maintenance guide.
