2004 G35 coupe, I commute my car 140 miles a day. Been doing it for about 3 years. I do about 40k a year on my car. I haven't had many problems with this car except an idler pulley and a cam shaft position sensor. I use Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Extended. I change my oil at either 3k or 6k and do all other regular maintenance. Lately my car has sounded like crap.

I have no power loss, no rough idling, it sounds like an internal problem at idle, partial load, and full load. It's more of a *tick, tick, tick, tick* I was thinking bearing.

Sounds exactly like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK1vvKOCsEg

I have a knock on the drivers side engine bay (near the intake box). I've combed through forums and people are saying timing chain tensioner problem. I spoke to the head foreman at my local Infiniti dealership, and he said he needs to see it. He also said it's not worth the 16 hours of labor, plus about $600 for the part IF it is the timing chain tensioner, being that it is an old engine. He said he'd rather throw a used engine in it, to save money and save headaches down the road.

Use this link as a reference for timing chain tensioner location if you are not familiar:

So any guesses? Suggestions? Advice?

Replace the motor. Forget fixing it. If you're having something Knock inside the motor, it may be tons of other problems associated with it.

Start saving for a new one which comes with all new parts and a warranty.

December is an excellent month for car shopping
Check out the price for a new one and place a For Sale sign on your G & see what happens

Good Luck

Thanks for the input you guys. I am dropping my G off at the dealership tomorrow morning and hopefully by the afternoon I'll see what the verdict will be. Keep you posted, but please continue with the advice, suggestions, and any other questions. Thanks.

That sound is definitely rod knock in the "you-tube video". Either engine rebuild or find a used one. That engine won't last long either with a 140 mile commute. The knocking will eventually get louder, you will start to loose power and eventually the motor is going to seize up and more than likely push a rod through the block when it does.

If it was my car I would check the spark plugs, if plugs good, then change to a higher viscosity oil. If no change for the better, then just drive it till it dies. You do have AAA coverage or something similar?

start looking for a new motor. Full motor with accessories can be had relatively cheap. My buddy bought one with ~45K miles for $1100 and it had throttle body down to AC power steering. Made for an easy swap when he had rod knock (blew his motor using nitrous)
