Hello NICO

My beloved father's J30 was given to me awhile ago, and I have been giving up on it due to the transmission....

The car runs and drives ! BUT as the car moves towards 2nd gear it slips and the gear deos not catch UNTIL Im going around 30mph.
It deos this on 3rd gear as well near 60mph.... so basically the car catches the gear but is very unresponsive and late.

I drive this car daily ! and I really need to find out what if I can fix this or I need a new transmission... BTW IM 19 STILL IN COLLEGE..... sooo bank is NEVER ENOUGH.

THE TRANMISSION FLUID AS WELL AS THE OIL AND OIL FILTER HAVE BEEN CHANGED TODAY. SPARK PLUGS 2 !

drove it around today starts up and drives but still the same issue... I also read about a REV SENSOR ? MAYBE THAT MIGHT FIX MY ISSUE?

what would be my next step?
please help ! Hope i explained everything correctly

Try this diag and report back.
Transmission Self Diagnostics
Courtsey of Gerardjg

Transmission Self Diagnostics
using AT light below your temperature gauge on the dash
1-Warm up engine
2- Shut off car and turn ignition switch to ACC position
3-Wait 5 seconds
4-Move shifter to D
5-Turn ignition switch on do not start

AT check light should come on for about 2 seconds

6-Move shifter to 3
7- step on gas fully and release
8-Move shifter to 2
9-Move shifter to 1
10-step on gas fully and release

The At Check light should start flashing 11 flashes a
slight pause and start over again. All flashes should
be the same length, any flash that is longer indicates a
trouble the following list is what the trouble circuit or part is.

A longer flash indicates

1st Flash Revolution sensor
2nd flash Speed sensor
3rd flash Throttle position sensor
4th Shift solenoid valve a
5th Shift solenoid valve b
6th overrun clutch solenoid
7th tourqe converter clutch solenoid
8th fluid temp sensor
9th engine speed signal
10th turbine revolution sensor
11th pressure solenoid valve

The symptom that denotes, you have a rev sensor issue is if when your driving, it drives fine and then suddenly it decides it doesn't want to shift from 2nd to 3rd. However, if your pull off to the side, turn off the car, wait a few minutes and turn it back on and drive some more, transmission shifting is fine till the issue appears again. As a first step run the transmission self diagnostic as above.

Because of the age of the car, I woudn't be suprised if you need a new transmission. I don't know which province or state you live in, but J30 transmission's always had a short lifespan in the southern states. The heat is a killer.

hi, new member here. my 1994 stays stuck in 1st gear. I turn the car off, start it up again, then it works fine. It shifts just fine when it is shifting. This seems to occur every couple of days. I tried the transmission test, several times, but the at light never starts it's blinky blinky. i know the light works, it comes on when I begin the test, but that's it. Does this test work on a 1994?

Hey, yodawill2000; you have the distinction of being my 1st response to a post!! The neutral safety switch is certainly not the 1st place I'd have looked! I'll check into that at Autozone. I'm not intimidated of getting under my car on ramps like the fellow in the sticky, however, I would not have a clue as to where to find the location of the part on the transmission. any clues to offer there?

PS - due to other issues, such as check engine light also coming on, in addition to high fuel consumption, I've ordered a new throttle position sensor; an inexpensive and easy to get to part that in other posts in this forum suggest that it can possibly cause the falling out of gear problem. I've also seen reference to the rev sensor, but have not located the availabilty of that part, nor where it is located on the vehicle, any insights there?

another ps. from repair records, I see the transmission was rebuilt at 115k, and the vehicle now has 178k. when the transmission is not stuck in 1st, and it's not "hunting", it seems to work very well, shifting at the right points, and responding well... so I'm crossing fingers it's not the transmission, and just 1 or more of these fool sensors.

thanks, haasker
