Courier company, I assume? UPS, FedEx, etc. UPS is the worst for brokerage fees.
I bought some hockey gear a few years ago from the states, sweet deal until the package arrived and UPS demanded $90 for brokerage fees. My jaw just dropped as I paid the guy, the gear was only something like $350. That's an extra 25% fee. I think a lot of Canadians have been ripped off this way, especially a few years ago when the exchange rate was sweet and there were tons of deals to be had from US stores, so we all feel your pain.
I still look for deals from the states, but always make sure they ship USPS. If they only offer UPS/FedEx and it's a really good deal, I'll ask them if they'll make an exception and ship USPS this one time. If they don't, ask them to ship it as a gift and/or really lowball the price marked on the package.
Another way around it is to have the company ship to the UPS/FedEx station closest to the border and make a little road trip. If you're an honest person you'll pay custom fees on it, but it's nominal compared to brokerage fees.
I did this once, got a great deal on some Hakkas but shipping cross-border would have killed the price. So I shipped to Sweetgrass, Montana, which is literally spitting distance from the border. Took a couple days off, little six-hour road trip to Montana, along the way met up with friends in Calgary and Lethbridge and really made the trip worthwhile.
Probably quite a bit easier/quicker for you to pull something like that, you're a bit closer to the border than I am.
