If you insert a relay that is low power switched then you can tap into almost any key switched circuit on the car, the main power circuit would be powered off the battery but the relay shuts it off. One big bonus of a relay. It really opens up your possibilities.
Doing it direct with no relay then tends to overload your fuse value as the amp of the DRLs has to be added to a circuit that is already power sized as far as the wire gauge goes, good way to pop fuses or fry wiring.
I often use another pre-existing relay in the underhood fusebox by simply jumpering a short wire to a known key switched relay that then goes to my added one, it keeps all mods in the fusebox and better protection there. The cockpit box can be used as well. Use the DRL switch on the low power circuit as the ground past the second relay, it lowers issues doing that rather than switching the main power.
