Well, I'll soon be on my way to be digging into the timing belt and water pump replacement, are there any recommend kits? An most of the kits I find have the vtc springs and seals, anyone. Ever replace these on their own? Or is it one of those, don't fix it if it ain't broke thing?

VTC springs are very easy to replace, and yes, might as well if it comes in the kit.

This is basically the one to get.

I was looking at that one, but taxes weren't exactly that nice to me this year, would the 60k one be a safe bet for it? Or is it better for this one? Or personal preference really

It could, but that also could mean the Intake cam gears have some issues. They are known to fail and make noises. If they are leaking they need to be replaced. Otherwise, JWT makes stiffer springs for the VTC and help reduce/eliminate the noise. Sometimes the noise never comes back or it will accelerate the wear. JWT VTC springs are like $18 or so.

If you have no idea what was replaced before, 120k will be your best bet. The pulleys could be bad, tensioner could be bad, seals could be leaking. That is a call you need to make.

Just an FYI; oil pump replacement requires timing belt, and crank seal removal. Would make sense to do at the same time, no??

Why replacing the oil pump? I've never heard of one failing on these cars. My NA pump had over 250K mile and was still in good shape. (I dismantled it just out of curiosity after my TT swap).

i have oil pressure issues, ive factored out the oil pump being the issue causes there is not tapping or knocking, thats pressure related, just the little bit of rattle i have when it free revs which i belive to be the vtc springs being weak. so ill be replacing those, but when im ready to build ill upgrade the cams and adjustables too but thats aways away,

Oils pumps are designed to last longer than the car. They generally do not wear by design. Does that mean they go bad, no, they will fail but its mainly because of debris in the engine. If you want to truly test the oil pressure, buy a mechanical gauge and test it. DO NOT RELY ON THE FACTORY GAUGE!!!! It is there to make normal people see there is oil pressure. If there was no oil pressure you WILL have knock and in turn bad bearings.

Oil pressure lowers because bearings start opening up and getting larger in spec, which is a wear item. Oil filters can also cause oil pressure which can also ruin oil pumps because they do not filter properly. Fram filters are known for this. Thin oils will also lower oil pressure, because of the bearings, you see where I am going with this?

All it takes is 1 second with no oil going through the bearings to destroy them. This can be done on a hard turn with low oil, old oil which was broken down, and water in oil(antifreeze).

VTC springs are very easy to replace, when you have the covers off you will see caps on the cam gears held on by 4 8 or 7 mm bolts, take those off and they are right there. New JWT springs and seals, good to go. Like I said earlier, if they are leaking that is when you need to replace them.

Right I was using 5w40 rotella and once it got warmer out I drained a qt and added lukas over the winter and I always use a mobile 1 filter. Even when I worked at jiffylube I used the more expensive filter, still do and I don't use conventional oil either. I'll be back to royal or castrol can't decide just yet. But il also be doing an engine flush as well make sure it's super clean. At this time I'm getting the concept z 60k kit and when I get alil more cash ill be getting a few other things from Z1 as well, plan is to have her singing great by mid may or so
