Just called Everything Nissan-Infiniti, aka Scottsdale Infiniti Parts.Perhaps I misunderstood, I thought that the replacement Kevlar timing belts were rated for 105,000 miles.

The parts guy (not Joe) was puzzled when I aske him to confirm a part number to see if my current belt(replaced 5/98 @ 36K @ Scottsdale Infiniti) was the kevlar 105K belt. He had never heard of a 105K timing belt. He put me on hold and went and asked 3 tech who had never heard of this either.

What gives?

So I dropped another $165.00 on a timing belt, waterpump and driver's side outer tie rod end (cracked boot).

Water pump seems fine but since I'm in there I might as well do it. I'm already doing a full maintenance blitz.

BeltsHoses, thermostat

transmission filter & fluid (although I can't find M1 transmission fluid in Tucson)transmission cooler

crank case flush w/oil Seafoam, MMO, transmission fluid (Done) drained Mobil drive clean and cheap filter to remove any residual cleaners. REplace W/ good filter and M1 5-W30 when running again.

Plenum, throttle body and top engine carbon cleaning (done)rail flush (done)plugs (NGK from Scottsdale)

full brake job, caliper rebuild kits, flush W/ valvoline synthetic road test on loose material to open the ABS valving then ATE Superblue FLUSH, Speed bleeders, Slotted front rotors from AZHitman(Nice)

And now, Timing belt and Waterpump. DoHHH

Did I forget anything?

Please advise on the timing belt disagreement!!!

Part Number given by Everything Nissan-Infiniti = 1302845P86

Part number currently on vehicle = 1302845P00 Kevlar???

Thanks, Matt

The dealership I work at (Niello Infiniti of Concord, Ca.) says 105 no matter what. I looked it up in ALLDATA on my previous job, and it said the same thing. I thought it was a little weird that it wasn't 90k, but whatever they say...

The 93-94 J30s didn't have the Kevlar belt and it had to be changed around every 80k. The 95-97 J30s switched to the kevlar belt which lasted to around 105k. That's one reason that I bought the 95 model over the earlier years.

I'll bet the guys at T3 could give you part numbers.

The earlier model J30s did have cooler windshield wipers, but they'll fit on a 95+ model year!

I'm a little surprised Joe didn't know that.

I found a how-to write up for doing the job on a 300zx. They recommend doing the cam seals as well. Crank seal is a must. On the 300 there's a little trick for getting the crank seal into the right place using a small piece of velum as a tool.

Belt and water pump were just delivered. I guess I need to talk to Joe next time. I figured I would have gotten any needed advice on the phone yesterday from Scottsdale Infiniti.

Time to call again. I'm a little pissed that I'll have to spend another $7 on shipping. apparently not speaking directly to Joe was a bad decision. Last time I ordered Joe gave lots of good advice and reccomended several additional parts for the job I was doing. These were very low dollar parts so he wasn't just padding the bill.

I'm still a bit puzzled about the Timing belt issue, 93-97 J30 is all the exact same engine so why are ther different belts?

It was only a suggestion to consider. From what I've read the cam seals are a debateable topic. On the one hand it seems the seals aren't likely to leak anytime soon if you don't replace them, so a lot of folks, including techs/service writers, leave them alone. On the other hand, it's only a couple hours more work once you're in there, and the seals are cheap, so it may make sense to go ahead and replace 'em.

Why different belts? I dunno, I guess Infiniti saw room for improvement and changed to the kevlar. Personally, I don't see why you wouldn't use the Kevlar on the 93-94 model years if you changed it.

Why would they not switch to better belt technology ? All honda's since 97 run on kevlar belts standard. Lot of european cars do as well. I'm on a 57k 1993 J30 myself looking to go to the kevlar belt soon..The less I have to work on the car, the better..

Spoke to Joe,

According to Joe at Scottsdale the belt is Kevlar and good for 105,000 miles. Oh well I'm doing it anyway. Ordering seals and tensioner(if needed). I'll check the tensioner and not replace it unless needed ~ $130.

This baby should not need much attention for a while!!!

Stupid question I'm sure, but why did they even use timing belts? Tiiming chains generally last so much longer. Is it the cost?

The theory is less noise with belts, compared to timing chains with chain slap and other general noise. A 92 maxima has metal backed guides..meanwhile a 93 Q45 has plastic based guides..the more expensive car has a dodgy design.. To me, the J30 with the 300zx NA engine sounds louder compared to teh 92 maxima SE with VTC's.which were a dodgy design on the 92-94 DOCH maxima's. I would prefer a chain over a belt any day..
