I read a newspapers the other day, and found an article interesting. It was talking about letting your car idle at light for more than 10 sec burns more gas than restarting the engine, so shutting your engine saves gas, if you have to wait for the light change longer than 10 sec, it saves gas to turn the engine off , according to the author. But doing so wears the starter. I guess it is a risk vs benefit issue.

Yeah how much gas are you really gonna save... I always thought it was like a minute of idling is about the same as starting it...

Might save you a few pennies in gas, but it'll put unnecessary wear on the starter, more of a load on the battery and alternator, and remember that starting an engine is the hardest part for it. All the oil is draining down to the pan, and not being circulated by the oil pump.

I only shut mine off when the wife says she just want to run into a store and will be out in a minute.

If I did not know the age differences between me and you I would say we married to the same woman.

Funny part is she comes out 20 minutes later and smile on her face saying "See it was only a minute or two" But at the meantime I already restarted my car fewc times due to the cold/hot weather.

If its summer, I open all the windows before shutting down. If its winter, I put my coat on since I usually drive in short sleeve shirts year round.

Not a good idea unless it's a hybrid car that is designed for constant engine shut down/restart. Now if you're waiting for fast food (when they pull you ahead) it may be worth shutting down then....or anytime the spouse unit says "it will only be a min" as Telco mentioned

This is what I've always heard too... In fact, there used to be articles all the time about this exact issue.

Either way, I'll let my engine idle anytime I won't be stopped for 5+ minutes.

Telco & Zozo have it nailed, it's not worth it unless she leads you to believe she won't be long... lol

Then you know something's up

I worry about wear on the starter, battery and alternator with this idea you present. In fact, I doubt it is worth it. Howevr, if you have a manual transmission car and you on a downward sloping hill, then it might be worht it to the extent that you use the roll and the car in first gear to start the car instead of using the starter to start the car. I have seen people do so in downward sloping traffic in manual transmission cars. Only problem is that your clutch will wear out fast. However, I hate sitting in traffic with my G. I think the manual recommends against letting the G ideal for too long.

No but you should be in second gear if you are going to start the car rolling down hill.
