So yea i brought my car in (2003 spec-v) to the nissan dealer, and they called me after i had left my car over night and informed me that my car is burning alot of oil and that my cat is messed up and breaking off in my engine. So everything they told me i had told them was happening form the get go, so they had me call there 1800 number and file a case for nissan to give me a new engine i will know by tuesday what the final say is.

Vin= clear no recallsmileage=55,915cat=80,000/8yr warranty***power train= a 5 year 60,000 mile warranty but i am 2 months passed the 5 years and stil under mileage hopefully they still decide to fix it i believe it all depends on that.

It's a recall issue, even if your car isn't under it (which an 03 should be, but whatever). Nissan owes you a new engine, period.

yup they'd put another header with pre-cat on it. If i were you i'd go out and get either a nismo no pre-cat header or a OBX no pre-cat stainless header, if you keep the stock header on its viable to happen again. And the next time it'll be on your bill.

Unless the CAT is damaged and not working, it is illegal for them to put in a new CAT. That will factor into the decision.

As long as its a 50 state legal cat i dont see how they could say that you cant get a new cat? I just had the muffler shop put a new one on mine although mine was rusted to sh**.

If this is the case, then you should be getting a new motor. If the CAT is messed up as well, they should replace that too.

The cat is damaged, so that won't be an issue. It literally disintegrated and was sucked back into the cylinders via the exhaust ports.

Nissan knows about this problem, hence why it's a recall. The question is whether they'll honor it for a vehicle they consider out of the recall range. Sadly, the recall range is clearly skewed because this can happen on all SE-R/SE-R Spec V's 02-06.

This is why we tell EVERY 02-06 SE-R owner to get an aftermarket header ASAP, even if they have no intention of modifying the car.

On the QR the recall explains it, but basically this is how it works:

The ECU was programmed with too lean of a fuel map from the factory. Over time, the lean fuel mixture slowly eats away at the cat. The internals of the cat fall apart starting at the top, closest to the exhaust ports. Because the cat is only inches away from the exhaust ports, the vacuum created by the exhaust valve overlap with intake stroke can actually pull small pieces of cat back through the exhaust ports and into the combustion chamber. Having pieces of cat bounce around in the combustion chamber can then score cylinder walls. And of course, scored cylinder walls can lead to oil blow-by, which causes you to burn oil. Burn enough without checking it and you'll loose oil pressure and eventually spin a rod bearing.

My brother's car went all the way through that scenario and was then covered under warranty. When they pulled the exhaust manifold off, the cat had completely disintegrated and he had a spun rod bearing.

According to the recall, if the cat is at all disintegrated, they are supposed to replace the motor without question.
