Hey Guys,I have a friend that wants to go down to the track and race his 1972 Corvette against my 2009 G37S Coupe over the 1/4 mile straight track. He says his Corvette which has a 350 in it will beat the 2009 G37.

We are going to go to a legal track and I wanted to get some advice since I do not race.Don’t worry, I am going to practice and work up slowly.

Do I run the race using the normal automatic drive mode or will I get the best times using the drive sport mode? If it is the drive sport mode, is it best to shift just before red line or is it better to shift at around 5200 rpms where the maximum torque is?

Thanks,

Geoff

Man,

I thought the brotherhood of G 35 & 37's was thicker than water.

You guys aren't going to let a guy in an old Vett beat me?

I have no expirence with g35/37.

Since it's an auto, power brake at launch with traction control on at 2k rpm. Go sport mode. -500 rpm shifted before redline.

Practice makes perfect, don't try to break anything and good luck.

Try to get to a track and get some practice in a few weeks in advance...find out the rpm range you can launch at w/out spinning too much but also not too low to bog. If not, find a country road or parking lot to try it out safely in...just the launch..no need to go over 20mph even.

See if you can ask Audtatious...he has been to the track w/ his G37 and managed a 13.8 bone stock I believe...depending on what's done to the Vette, I'd say you have a good shot. The launch will be the biggest factor most likely...if you can find someone with stickier tires to borrow, it would definitely be a good thing.

Thanks Guys,

This is the stuff I am looking for.

His Vett is stock so do to the fact it's 36 years old, the G37 will beat it. Really what I was worried about is the driver.

So am I correct in saying also, that going through 4 gears in the 1/4 mile by running each shift to almost red line will be faster than using 5 gears and shift at 5200 rpm where the max torque is for this car? Or is it the other way around?

Thanks,

Geoff

Yes, take it past 5200 for sure. Just make sure you don't bang off rev limit...it'll slow you down more than you might think.
