I have a question about extra wheel weight than what is stock. My 96 se has the stock 18.5 lb cast wheels on it right now. I am looking to upgrade to a 17x7.5 without spending too much money. The problem is that I have only found a few wheels that are light enough and inexpensive enough. One of those is 19 lbs per wheel. Now, will this extra .5 lbs on each corner affect my driving significantly? I could go below 18.5 pounds without breaking the bank but Im not in love with the styling of those.

Don't sweat it. Your tires are goona weigh more too, so chances are (when upsizing) you may never be lighter than stock! Performance tires weigh a lot.:)

I think the only reason I got bunta was b/c I smoke cigs and enjoy doing the kinds of things he does (chill w/ friends while puffing on a smoke and stuff). I haven't tried drifting w/ my eyes closed yet!:)

If you arent actively and competitively(sp?) racing it, a .5lb or even 1-2lb difference in the overall weight of the wheel/tire assembly isnt going to matter much. Now if your in IMSA, or some such road racing and plan on being in the top 10 cars, yeah it would matter.-chet

I autocross, but really just for my own enjoyment. I dont go out there and try to win anything, because I know that I am not that skilled yet. I just want to learn how do drive as well as I can. Its all in fun, yet I raised the question because I still like to be competetive when I race and wasnt sure if extra wheel weight could adversely affect the car That much. Thanks.

I dont see a +40 offset being bad, if you're only upgrading to 17x7.5....

If the stock offset is +32, with a 1" wider rim, although the offset is shifting 1/3" towards the suspension, the rim is 1/2" wider on both sides of the offset.

Which means you end up with 1/6" more wheel towards the fender, and 5/6" more wheel towards the suspension.

That should fit no problem I would think.

That is funny you mentioned the rota because those are the wheels I am looking at. For the price, it is unbeatable. I like the Tarmacs which are 19lbs. The attack is sweet but they arent selling it in black which is what i want.

Exar, i used the offset calculator and Im not sure what my offset currently is but if it is 40 and i use 7.5" wide with a 45 offset,

then: The clearance from stut housing to the inside of the wheel will be 18mm LESSThe outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 8mm

if the offset is 42 and I use a 45 offset then: The clearance from stut housing to the inside of the wheel will be 16mm LESSThe outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 10mm

Will this work? As you can tell, I havent bought wheels for this car before so Im not sure how to tell if it will rub or cause problems.

you wont clear coilovers, and pretty much anything that runs over 12mm closer to the strut has a VERY high chance of scrubbing even the stock struts. Idealy you'd keep it + or - 5mm from the OE strut-to-wheel clearance. Z brakes may or may not be an issue with rota's as I dont have much experience with rotas and Z brakes.-chet

they are in the $200-$230 per wheel.
