Anyone have a wheel bearing fail yet? Wifes '08 sounds like it needs a new one. Shes at about 80k miles.

There have been a couple of reports of failed wheel bearings in this forum. It's not very common though.

Any idea if this is something that a Nissan dealer has to do or can my local shop do it with aftermarket parts?

Edit: n/m, found a Moog assembly at Advance Auto for $129. Might have to tackle this one myself. Just need to figure out what side it is.

jmbones,

You can't actually get just the bearing, you have to buy the entire hub assembly.

I strongly recommend using OEM Nissan wheel hub assembly part # 40202-JG01A (same # for both sides). They are ~$145, not much more than aftermarket parts and should be of much higher quality. Also note that the Nissan part comes with new wheel studs pre-installed.

BTW, before you go off and replace a bearing, make sure the splash shield behind the brake rotor is not rubbing. I recently had to bend mine back as it was contacting the rotor making rubbing/scraping noises! Usually bearing failure makes more of a groaning noise.

Yes I understand. This is definitely the bearing as I have had them go on previous vehicles. It is the tell tale humming sound that gets worse when you turn in a certain direction. The entire hub at Advance Auto was what I was referring to above for $129. I don't really have time to do it myself at this point and it's been humming for a while now so I just made an appointment at my local shop. Nissan dealer is over an hour away, shop is 5 minutes and it's my wifes and she cannot be without the vehicle as she works for a hospital and needs to be there. Luckily she has off when I made the appointment. I am also having 4 new Firestone Winterforce studded snow tires mounted/balanced at the same time. Got them from TireRack for $509 studded and delivered.

Eventually I am going to buy 4 winter steel wheels or cheap aluminum wheels and mount the snows to them for dedicated use. Then I can just swap those out each winter like I do for my truck. But that gets costly with new TPMS and I need to visit a dealer to have those programmed.

I don't use TPMS sensors on my winter tires/wheels. TPMS is not mandated in Canada, so there aren't any legal/regulatory issues. The TPMS warning light will illuminate but is easily masked off for the winter using a small square of black electrical tape.

In the US, it's likely a different story as TPMS has been mandated by the gov't. Not sure if any shop will permit you to install snow tires/wheels without TPMS sensors.

I can get them installed without the senors but I dont want my wife staring at the light, nor do I want tape over it because that would worry her as well with our 6 month old daughter in the car.
