'08 Model Steering Gear Recall

Has anyone received the recall letter yet? My wife got hers a few weeks ago, havn't decided to take it in yet as it doesn't exhitbit any symptoms yet.

Model Affected2008 NISSAN ROGUE

DescriptionNISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 ROGUE VEHICLES. A SCREW IN THE STEERING GEAR HOUSING COVER MAY LOOSEN OVER TIME AND COULD FALL OUT. AS IT LOOSENS, THE STEERING RESPONSE OF THE VEHICLE MAY BE COMPROMISED BUT THE DRIVER WILL RETAIN STEERING CONTROL.

ConsequenceTHE SCREW MAY EVENTUALLY COME OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR COVER. IF LARGE STEERING INPUTS ARE MADE WITH THE COVER SCREW MISSING THE PINION SHAFT MAY COME OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR RESULTING IN A COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

RemedyDEALERS WILL INSPECT WHETHER THE STEERING GEAR COVER SCREW IS LOOSE AND WILL BE RETIGHTENED TO THE PROPER SPECIFICATION. DEALERS WILL ALSO INSTALL A COVER PLATE TO PREVENT THE SCREW FROM POSSIBLY COMING OUT OF THE STEERING GEAR. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

I did it months ago. They basically replace a couple nuts/bolts with torque nuts/bolts and loc-tite.

Tightened my steering a little bit.

This recall came out several months ago, and we have been discussing it mainly in conjuntion with the more significant CVT reprogram recall here:

The letters are not distributed promptly at all, that is why we recommend visiting this NICO forum site periodically and http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/ for a list of all Technical Service Bulletins and Recalls.

Like Ruben said, it's a pretty minor operation although very important to prevent a serious safety issue from occurring. Nothing to worry about, I'd recommend just taking your car in and letting the service department perform all outstanding recall work for the Rogue (I think we're up to 4 recalls currently on the Rogue).
