I bought my 08 max used and when i picked it up, the dealership only gave me one key fob with the key inside. I asked them how much a backup one would cost and they said 150 for the fob, and another 150 for the key. 300 is a little steep for me.

Is there any way i can buy the key fob online and then take it to the dealer to get programmed? Also, can i get the key cut somewhere other than the dealer?

on the 4th gen you can program the fob yourself easily - check your owners manual, that's where i got my directions from - but might be different on the 6th. if your key is chipped you can get it cut at a locksmith (did it for free for me) but i don't know about programming the key itself - maybe in the owners manual as well?

btw i got my chipped uncut key off ebay for $7. fobs are more expensive but a lot cheaper than a dealer.

For the later 6th gens it's definitely different: they have push-button start, so the key fobs aren't just passive remotes, they ARE the key...NATS-enabled RFID remotes.

It may still be possible to find the key or remote (or both) on ebay...but they still need to be programmed--which is where the dealer's costs come from anyway.

So unfortunately, if you want the spare key, you're pretty much stuck paying Nissan's prices. It's partly a security measure (Nissan doesn't want everyone to have access to the NATS encoding systems) but that doesn't make a $300 key any easier to swallow.
