08 EX35 RWD Dynoed + K&N Filter Review

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I got my EX dynoed today and I have 2 sets of the numbers.

With the dyno comparison result, my fully stock 08 EX35 made 276 hp @ 6650 rpm and 237 lb-ft torque @ 5300 rpm.

However with STP corrected power, its 240 hp @6650 rpm and 203 lb-ft torque @ 5300 rpm.

The result is very close to what I expected.

Now about the K&N filter review.

Does it help? Answer is yes. Does it give you more power as advertised? Answer is no.

There is a power drop between 4100 rpm to 4600 rpm. K&N filters did help to reduce the drop between this rpm range. We figured the drop is due to the air box since the car ran on dyno 4 times and both times with the K&N filters there are less drop. It doesn’t help with peak power at all.

It might make the engine roar a little louder, but not much.

Is the K&N filter worth it?

My stock filters are pretty dirty and they only have 5000 miles on it. So in my case, changing the filter every 10000 miles would probably be nice. They cost about $25 for a pair and replace those takes me about 5 minutes. K&N filters are about $130 for a pair, and the recharge kit is $10, so you guys do the math. I have no idea if they are worth the money seriously because I rarely drove my EX over 4000 rpm due to increasing gas price. I will keep them to see if they help on MPG like they were advertised. (My guess is no)

By the way, I talk to the guys at Technosquare about ECU re-flash for the EXs.I will need 5 cars (EX35 RWD No-Nav) to start the process. I guess this will never start…

10 more hp for sure. LOL

If you consider the K&N than try these guys. I have them on and happpy with the results. Lot easier to clean it too. Soapy water and dry them. Yeah and cheaper too.

Or you can try these

Whatever goes in 2007+ g35 sedan or g37 would fit in the EX.

I have no idea what are the differences as far as the ECU if you have a navi...However Technosquare is a very reputable Nissan/Infiniti ECU tuner. If they tell me there is a difference, there must be difference.

Foam filters (HKS) are also a good option to go with.

Foam filters generally let in a lot more dust and dirt than regular filters.

The HKS Mushroom one is the worst.

Technosquare is one of the best for Nissan. However there are some good alternatives. I like the removable units instead of ecu flash.

Try send an email to these guys. They just came out with one for the G. People seem to be really happy with it. They used to work with the trucks only.

+1. I just ordered qty 2 K&N Air filters for my new Inifiniti EX35. I talked to a dyno tech and with these air filters, you will get 10-12 HP more. Proven from his studies and lab test.

Sweet..... OK, $56.49 each is high, but hell well worth it. Now my EX is over 300+ HP. I can live with that......

10-12 hp more at the wheels from K&N filters is a load of crap.

You'll be lucky to get 1-2 whp (or you could even lose hp if the OEM filter is well designed)

As the original poster said, he got some mid-range power from the filters, but no big increase in peak hp.

Well that what I was told and read on the dyno from the print out. I knew 10-12 is a lot higher than I thought. I think 3-4 max. I am no fool, I know when people lie to me. Who knows what the truth is.

I need to get my ex up on a dyno with my Plus 2 timing advance...

I'd assume it added around 15 Horsepower To the Wheels but thats just a guess.

Maybe Steve The Tech would have a good guess...

After you get the dyno done, scan and upload the graphs so we can all see them.

Thanks,KJ

First, I need to get my car. It is on order. Maybe in the next two weeks. I need to get some time to drive 60 miles to the dyno shop which are experts. I wont use a crappy shop or people I dont know.

I think taking a brand new car and putting it on a dyno at WOT for who knows how long is one hell of a way to brake in a green engine? It is even worse to pull perfectly good clean OEM air filter elements out and put some expensive oiled cotton fiber ones in their place? I think the transition from one filter to twin on the new G's and EX's was a big step forward by Infinity engineering! What are these guys going to do with 2 more HP! After brutalizing that poor brand new engine on the dyno it will probably loose 10 HP from the wear and tear on the tight sliding and reciprocating engine components.Back in my Harley Davidson R+D department days we took engines off the production line every day but broke them in for 4 hours prior to WOT test runs. Still had some seize up but thats when the 74 and 80 in^3 could only be run WOT for less than 30 seconds (LOL)

Nissan does the engine break-in at the engine factory on an engine stand. The owner related break-in period is more for the differentials.

+1 That is also what I know, therefore, Dyno is no issue for these engines. My guy is an expert and knows what engines to do and not to do.

gofast24,

Thanks for your thoughts, but I have a let you know that you are wrong about these engines. Most new engines are not like 10 years ago. I know for a fact that these engines have been tested, burned in and are fully cured/mature. That is the term that the engineer used, when I talked to him.

Regarding the filters. I will in fact get 3+ HP more with these filters. All the test that I have seen show this. These filters are also very good with trapping the micro particles. Most paper filters are not that good. I have been using the K&N filters now for 15 years and I trust them. They have been proven many times over to do more than just increase HP.

The day I get my car, I will add these. I already bought them and cant wait to use them.

No issues there.
