Hi. New member here. New to Nissan and forums. I left the VW Scene for Nissans and I know very little about them. Anyway, I just recently bought a 2007 Sentra SER Spec V. Car had 22k on the ODO. No accidents, very clean and got a great price on it. It's just this one thing. When driving the car, I noticed the gearbox whines with excessive loudness. This is reguardless of the operating temperature. As I shift through other gears, it gets progressively louder. It's bothering me. The gearbox shifts fine and smooth. I read a post about a few guys having shifting problems when the gearbox is cold, I have yet to experience this. Mine shifts perfect every time, no grinding or resistance. It just whines so freaggin loud. Is this normal? Anyone who owns a 07 Spec V experiencing this loud gearbox whine? I still have until October until the warranty is void. If someone else is experiencing this, let me know. I figured since the gearbox has short ratio gears in it, maybe they used semi-helical gears for strength, which is very close to straight cut gears(straigh cuts are even stronger and much more noisy). If so , this would explain the whining noise....Any thoughts?? explainations? Thanks.

Also to explain the noise or whine, it is not a grinding noise or anything like that, it is a constant medium tone howl like whine...like gear noise. That is the best i could describe it.

I've been experiencing this as of late as well. i too have an 07 spec v with just under 39K miles on it. I'm not really sure what it could be seeing as i've had a full transmission flush and use the same transmission fluid from nissan. I'd go look into it, i would myself for mine, i just haven't had time. if you find anything out let us know.

Check the gear oil. Last time I heard that kinda noise was in my Hardbody. It wasnt long after (yes, I ignored it.) the gearing took a crap on me.
I'm not saying this is the problem, but it's the first thing I'd check.

On the 8th of August, i'm going to drop the car off at the dealer to have
them check it out. I read another post here and i believe someone with a
08 spec v had the same problem. I think. Anyway he sId the gearbox had
a couple of cracked gears inside and Nissan warrantied the transmission and replaced
it with a new gearbox. I still got a warranty left so ill keep u guys posted
on what i find out.

K. for anyone watching this thread...I dropped my car off at the dealer. They drove it and discovered the noise in the transmission and a few other problems the car was having. The didn't explain what was wrong with the gearbox. They just said. OK...We ordered a brand new transmission for your vehicle. It should be here in a day. Supposedly it was coming from Orlando florida. I'm here in Tampa FL so they said it should be a day or so. They are also replacing the fuel sending unit or the fuel pump...one or both...When they call me with an update on the car i will ask what causes the noise in the transmission to see what kind of answers they can come up with. Stay tuned.

Yes, I have read about one other person with the same problem and you are correct, he too had to have the transmission replaced - can't remember the exact details but the symptoms were identical, he even made a video of it so people can listen to the whining noise.

Ok I got the car back from the dealer....They did not explain very much at all about the noise. They told me that the noise was not normal and that transmission needed to be replaced. They replaced the transmission along with the fuel sending unit and fuel level gauge... (These two parts were showing erroneous readings all warrant so nothing out of pocket) I asked for a technical explaination but they said that they do not open the gearboxes here. They send them back to the manufacturer and replace as new.....
Ferman Nissan, Tampa FL...
Faja: I was soooo glad to get rid of this noise. It was friggin anoying. Ans it just kept getting louder and louder and louder...I though the thing was gonna lock up on me.....as of 09-4-2010 I have 32,730 miles on the odo...the warranty expires on 36k or 10-19-2010...I had to do this before the expiration because I don't have the duckets for a new gearbox for this car...which is probably somewhere from $2,500 - $3,500...!!!

Sorry guys, I did not find a technical explaination for the annoying gear whine, but I can issue some advice for those of you who drive B16 Sentras....SPEC V or just a regular Sentra 2.0S with manual or CVT transmissions, if you hear any weird noises or anything, DO NOT HESITATE to visit your local Nissan dealer to have the noise checked out. If you have warranty, USE IT!!! There is obviously a problem with these trannies....Don't pay for it!!

That's great that you got all that fixed under warranty!!! I have an 09 with 48k kms (30k miles) and so far so good - knock on wood!!! I follow the B16 community quite a bit and haven't really seen too many complaints like yours - actually you're the 2nd one and then there's "plalm" who also responded to your post.

Glad it all worked out for you :woot:

Yeah. thanks. For the most part it's a pretty dependable car. I guess whoever owned it before me probably drove it much harder than normal use, which might have cotributed to the problems...but all is good now.

Glad to hear you got it fixed with nothing out of pocket. Yeah the CVT can run upwards of $3000.00 easy. It's not something you want to do a hit or miss rebuild on either, I know. I helped put a rebuilt one into a 05 Sentra once, 2 months later I was helping pull it back out.
