Just purchased a used 07 M35x and have a few issues now that I own it:
1) Been very cold 0° this morning, started the car and it screamed at me, sounds like it's coming from the steering column - when I turn the wheel left or right the car squeals louder. Once it's warm the sound goes away. Don't think it's the belts as when I turn the wheel the noise is louder, power steering pump possibly? Checked the fluid and its new and full.

2) Noticed a whine in the car when moving from a dead stop - not sure if these are related issues - sounds almost like the AWD is whining - not even sure if this is possible.

Love the car but the squealing noise at startup is totally embarassing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would guess it's the belts, except you say it's coming from the steering column and changes when you move the wheel.... but did you open the hood?

Will do that today, expected to get down to -10 tonight.

If it's the belts do they need to be replaced or just tightened?

If it IS the belts (and we can't be sure just yet), I believe the 07 has 2 belts and both are relatively inexpensive when not purchased at the dealership. Perhaps the belt that is squealing is not related to power steering and that could explain why moving the steering wheel does not change the noise. The labor charge at the dealer might not be so cheap, but if you check in the FAQs thread, you will see detailed instructions with pics to guide you if you choose to replace them yourself.
** as always, when buying a used car ... if you have no clear documentation that the part was replaced - it's safest to consider it is as old as the car itself. In this case, the belts could be nearly 8 years old and replacement would be a good idea regardless of how they 'look'. The last thing you need is a belt to break whilst in rush hour traffic on a main motorway, with you, sat there, waiting for a tow to the mechanic.

I don't know.. I had a g35 that did the same thing one year when it got cold.. would just squeal like hell when i started it so I stomp on it a little bit and it would go away. Eventually it got worse before I brought it to the shop.. However I had just recently had the belts replaced and I can't remember what they said. But they could either be too lose or too tight. They just replaced the belt.

Actually the sound does change when I turn the steering wheel.
Makes a whining sound low to high pitch as I turn the wheel back and forth.

Here is the video of the '07 M35X cold start this morning at -15°F.
Video isn't great cause it was dark this am but sounds like the belt? Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
