Odd you should mention that. I'm near Miami and we get cold-ish weather in Feb/March for a day or two in a row, then back to 80 degrees. Last night we had a cold front run through and temps dropped all the way to 50 degrees. This morning, both of my smart keys went titz-up and I had to open the door with the valet key (manually ARGH!) and I also had to stick the key in the dash slot to start the car. My car battery is nearly new. I find it 'unlikely' that batteries in BOTH smart keys would go titz-up on the same day. Maybe I will wait a day or two till we go back to 80 degrees before I take take the black beast to the dealer to have them do a look. For now, I shall use the valet key I guess. Let me know if you find another issue I should check.

they is a clip on the back of ur key when up flip it a real key slides out. u can use it to unlock the door. slide it back in and put the key in the port to crank when its acting up or battery low. I just don't understand why it wont unlock the door or turn the alarm on or crank when its cold outside

OK ...... after a load of whining (what my g/f calls her gentle suggestion) ... I replaced the batteries in my smart keys and Buh-ZING ! both keys work perfectly. What are the odds BOTH keys went titz-up on the SAME morning ???
Maybe this is a sign I should go wast $20 on lotto tickets? Nah

I don't think that you can charge the batteries.
To my understanding, that port is for when the key battery is too low to be detected, but you can put the fob in there to still drive... working on rfid or something similar.

atlM35 is correct. The dealer confirmed to me a while back that the batteries in the smart keys are disposable and NOT rechargeable and the slot in the dash is exactly as atlM35 says - to use when the smart key's battery is too low to send / receive from a distance.
