Two thoughts:
1) Mine had many scratches and I used a metal polish by hand to rub the bloody hell out of them - now they have very few scratches that still show and since then I make it a point NOT to let my shoes near them LOL. (I used Griot's Garage metal polish - works great on wheels, too)
2) I wouldn't recommend dipping them as shoes will be dragged across them and plasti-dip isn't great for stopping scrapes.
I looked on Ebay and there are used ones available, but they seem to be pre-scratched already, LOL. And I agree - new ones from the <gulp> dealer will be very expensive. Whatever you decide to cover them with you will have to determine if that product is likely to be scratched easily. And pick your feet up, man! LOL
