Hello fellow G owners I recently relocated to New Jersey and about to endure my first winter with the G35 rear wheel drive (2007 4-dr). I'm concerned about getting to work every day during the winter if we have a lot of snow/ice and am considering trading in for a Nissan Pathfinder.

Does anyone out there have any real experience driving this car in the snow/ice? Would Sandbags in the back and snow tires really make a big difference? Is there anything else I can do? Getting a new SUV is not the most feasible thing for me right now but my priority is reliability to get around this winter.

ANY Input is much appreciated!!!!

Thanks,B

Welcome to NJ LVG35Sport

Winters are no problem in NJ if you drive smart.

1- Keep good tires on you vehicle2- If snow is predicted and its not snowing when you leave for work leave early3- If heavy snow is predicted once te first flakes begin falling you've got about 2 hours to get your a$$ home before the roads get bad.4- If you wake up & the snow is piling up stay home.5- The NJ Turnpike does an excellent job and the Garden State Parkway is usually ok but not as good as the turnpike. The other main roads are usually kept plowed.6- leave plenty of space between you & other vehicles & don't drive in the left lane doing below the speed limit which you will quickly discover approaches 80 in some places

A manual transmission is best but if you have an automatic be very careful when using your brakes. Downshifting is much safer in bad weather.Gas is cheap, property taxes are high.

Good snow tires on separate wheels would be the very best thing.

Look for opinions from the web/magazines for the best snow tires. Don't take one person's opinion or a good deal from Tire Rack, etc... Once you have a separate set of tires & wheels, $20-$30 is all it costs to flip them on and off.

I appreciate the responses! I am trying to get into an SUV although I am still a little undecided. Wish I just bought the G35x model but hindsight is always 20/20 Leaving work early and not going in whenever the forecast shows snow is not going to be an option ... although i only have a 15 minute drive... I could stay away from hills and throw a good pair of snow tires on w/ some sandbags in the trunk i guess!

Winter driving is all aout skill. Of course if you have the AWD that helps a bit.

Thanks again. I've driven sports cars in the Jersey winters before (Nissan 350Z and 300ZX twin turbo) it's basically like ice skating and definitely an acquired skill. For the 3-4 months of bad conditions I think it may be worth it to just throw some snow tires on the G and stick it out. My final question is this:

When buying new snow tires why do I also need (or am suggested to) buy wheels as well? Can't I keep my same rims and just buy the tires to swap out during the winter months? The most economical thing for me right now would be to pick up some good blizzak's from tirerack and slap them on my rims- is that possible?

Thanks again for everyone's input!! Trying to keep the G going strong

why is there a "y" in your Infinit G35 profile summary? Anyway, once that is taken care of, for cost purposes, snow tires can be put on your factory wheels, if they are available. Many people still like the wheel/tire combo from tire rack so they never pay mount/unmount fees for the tire swapping, and having different wheels will keep the factory ones in great shape.

It's "Infiniti", not "Infinity".

I kinda regret not throwing winter rims on with my 19 inch Blizzaks... I have some rim scuffs now

Buy Blizzaks, keep the VDC on unless you are in an abandoned Parking Lot and want to have some fun. Watch out for the "other guy", respect the weather conditions and you'll be fine!

Thanks! I don't even know how to control the VDC traction control LOL. So I'm shopping around for a nice pair of Blizzak WS60's ... The local Firestone is quoting me at $137/tire and they range from $70-80 on Tirerack.com with only $35 shipping. Makes sense obviously to order online. How do I know what size of a blackwall to get though? 175/65R15? I don't even have my user manual ... i'm trying to research it online...just a stock '07 G35 4-door...
