I just bought an 07 350z 3 weeks ago and have 2.2k miles on it. Followed the break in mentioned in the owners manual. This is my first manual car so I may just being over cautious:

1. The rattling noise when stopped, disappears when clutch is pressed in. Is this normal?

2. Shifting from 1st to 2nd gives a grinding sensation every so often, never notice it when shifting early at like 5-8mph. Seems to be more prevalant when shifting into 2nd at 15mph when trying to accelerate fast. Is this normal?

3. I noticed when stopped near a close wall near the drivers side today, that when the car begins moving in 1st I can hear a rattling from, what appears to be, underneath the car, all the way through 2nd. I only heard it because I was so close to a wall that I could pick it up. Is this a problem with the transmission?

I really hope I dont have to goto the dealer and get a new transmission at 2k miles, thats just ridiculous. Any ideas are welcomed. Thanks!

I've had the same problem. Mine started with just 63miles on it. other people mentioned that it might be normal. I'm not sure how to get the dealer to fix it. They even compared my Z to others on the lot and they all make that same rattling sound.

3800 miles, I have the same 1st to 2nd "clunk" you have...

...and the rattle....

...I have not noticed the "moving rattle" from the transmission as of yet...

and I'm sort of waiting for the clutch issue (sticking) to rear it's ugly head soon...

but....man I love my car!!!!

5,500 miles on my 07-same noise that I read everywhere...I figure I have a couple of years on the warranty...try shifting the transmission when the engine is not started...see how that feels. I cant wait until you break in your engine..it will sound MARVELOUS!!!!

Thanks for the replies, Im going to take it to the dealers this Thursday and see what they say as well.

What RPMs do you normally shift info 2nd when just casually driving? and Im guessing you shift at a really high RPM when trying to get a quick start?

Personally.....my "everyday" 2nd gear usually happens between 2000-3500rpm

Depends on my mood, might just be a casual take-off from the light, or I might want to listen to it growl just a little...

Keep us posted to what the dealer says. I'm especially curious. I'm also addicted to the sound, I shift at 2500-3000rpm.

Dealer said the noise was indeed the throwout bearing and it was normal. As for the shifting issues with 2nd, just have to really make sure the clutch is completely in before putting it into 2nd and it seems to work ok atm. Maybe I was just a small distance from the floor when putting it into 2nd and not realizing it.

He also mentioned that it will get better as the car gets worn it, considering its all completely new parts that havent been used.

the 1-2 shift clunk that you are getting is going to happen in most manual transmissions. Try shifting at a moderate rpm instead of shifting at low engine speeds, this should stop the problem altogether. As for the noises, remember, at idle in neutral with the clutch engaged, you have 6 pairs of gears spinning around, it isn't going to be totally quiet.
