For those of you who haven't heard...our car finally has a BIG recall.

The problem is the brake master cylinder is leaking past the piston into the brake booster. I have already performed a couple of the inspections, first on my own car (the guinea pig) and it passed. If you suck up more than 1/2 a cup (looks almost like a urine sample cup connected to a supersucker brake fluid sucker) then the master cylinder needs to be replaced. I have replaced one today, and it's very easy. This is a very important recall, because the customer's car I worked on had the red brake light on.

I would imagine Nissan is sending out a notice to those owners that are affected?

Yeah, the brake light is the major symptom that something isn't quite right under the hood. Like Tech said, it is a fairly simple fix and you'll be without your car for maybe 3 hours tops if its a busy day at the dealership.

Thanks for the head's up. I'll make sure this is in the problem-areas thread. I think I already put it in there cause we had a member run into that problem.

would this cause exhaust smoke upon start-up, esp. more when sits more than a few days?dealer just replaced it ...however, before that had cyl. walls boroscoped and markings were found. aren't the walls supposed to be smooth, or does the specv, etc have some factory etching?, to help? the engine ???thanks

No, the brake master is in no way related to smoke in the exhaust.

I think they should be smooth. Scoring indicates a lack of oil, piston ring problems, or something has been sucked through the engine.

Take it in and see what they find, then make sure to post up. This could be very bad as the previous generation had a few issues that cause the same symptoms.

fyi follow-up: dealer found that brake fluid was being sucked in vacuum line to the brake booster and removed the fluid from the booster. they said this was the cause of the smoke during cold (am) start-up.they installed a new brake master cyl., per recall and the there was no smoke this am, during cold start-up. smoke problem solved for good???

also, had cyl. walls boroscoped and they could see the normal? cross-hatching from factory honeing of cyl. bores. however, they could see carbon deposits and loose carbon sticking to cyl. walls (normal for only 1800 mi.?) - may be i need take a long freeway trip to try to clean the deposits up ???

does all of this make sense, or is some of it bs (from the dealer)????

The vacuum line issue is plausible. No more smoke is a good indicator of that.

Loose carbon can be broken up with a good backroad workout, depending on how much and how stuck it is.
