Just got it used. Some good stuff and some annoying stuff about the vehicle. I'm fairly certain its one of the base models. Only engine code is a 420. I can ignore that for a while.

1. Speedometer reads at half. Same with odometer. So far my research shows this vehicle doesnt have JUST a speed sensor. Somehow a number of sensors gather info for a speed signal.

Anybody else run into this and made a fix? People in these forums usually got an answer for weird stuff that just isnt in the manual.

2. CD Player. It can be coaxed into playing a cd after multiple insertions. I got another unit from the junkyard, but its totally different and doesnt share all the same connectors. Anybody know the difference between them or if maybe I can relocate the CD player from the junkyard unit in the original one?

3. I suspect the cruise control doesnt work because the ABS light is on. I forget the code in that system, but it sounds like a bad connection to the ABS unit. I'm hoping I can remove the cowl trim to get at the connector easily.

Already pulled the sliding door panels and zip tied the door opening cables to the latch!

Got another instrument panel for cheap, that had warranty tape on it. It had been rebuilt so I thought the odometer, gas and temp gauge would be good. Nope! Only temp doesnt have missing segments on the LCD. I did buy fresh ribbon strips and a soldering gun to replace the strip on the original.

Going to tackle spark plugs soon too. Plenum removal on my 3000GT is super simple. My Camry is a pain. I'm wondering where the Nissan fits.

Correspondence appreciated.

Pete, I took a quick look at the FSM and it states that speedometer and odometer gets its signal from the ABS unit, since you have an ABS code it is most likely related to that.

Look here on page 6

As far as the CD player goes, there are several used units on ebay that you can take a look at and maybe you will be able to tell which is the one you need. You can get the part number off of your unit and compare with the part number of the ebay units.

In many cases the P0420 code is caused by a bank 1 faulty catalytic converter but can also be bad o2 sensor, exhaust leaks, intake air leaks and several other things. You can look in the FSM here for some more info on the code.

Here is the section of the FSM for spark plug replacement:

Usually if CD does not pick up disk right away, it means a stretched belt on the lifter pulley.
Dunno about Camry, but plenum removal on VQ35 is a nightmare.

Thanks for the info. Sorry I havent been able to get on here until now.

Got the spark plugs changed OK. Removing the plenum was time consuming but not any more annoying than most vehicles.

I got a Chinese kit for repairing the fuel.temp LCD and it worked perfectly. The gauges I got at the junkyard were off a different model and a bunch of warning lights stayed lit.

Now to find out why the ABS isnt reporting the speed correctly.
