I've been doing tons of forum reading on both of these cars, more on the Genesis because that's what I thought I was going with. I think I'm ready to buy this very soon.

Top two options are 2006 M35x black with graphite interior, premium and technology package w/ 62k for 18999 vs 2009 Genesis 3.8 v6, platinum metallic with jet back and saddle interior with premium package w/45k for 20998. (minor left front damage according to car fax,).

I won't bore you with the details on exact condition as I'm more interested in members opinion between the two models. I live in MN so I tend to favor the AWD aspect a little bit but I'm totally willing to go rear wheel drive with winter tires but I guess that does add to the cost a lil bit.

Right now I own a 2004 GTP CompG with light mods w/75k on her. I'd like to get a larger sedan to fit two car seats in back and be able to haul the family to the grandparents house instead of taking my wife's SUV. I have a 60 mile round trip commute in the Mpls area so I spend a lot of time in the car and I want to enjoy it! The GTP has been a fun car but I'm ready for a bit more comfort. I was a little surprised by the low end grunt my car had compared to these two but I really don't care about that anymore. I just want some power on tap and both of these have it.

I've read comparisons between the two but it was always a newer M than a 2006 of course. Has anyone owned both these cars and have some perspective? Anyone else is welcome to add any opinions they have as well.

Welcome!

The low end grunt you refer to is probably the American low end torque style of thinking, versus the high revving power of the Asian philosophy. What I want to know is... how did you manage to keep the miles off? I have an 06 with 115k already!

So... my opinion?

Have you seen the interior on the Genesis? It is not exactly daring or noteworthy. Sort of a generic Asian Buick clone. Then there's the exterior... it tries so hard to be something it's not that they even downplay any sight of the word "Hyundai". And those Aston Martin style badges LOL. Reminds me of people gluing Bentley badges on their Chrysler 300c's. Who are they trying to fool?

I would never own a Hyundai. Hyundai's foundation is more clone than rival. Hyundai traces back to the Excel. Infiniti made a statement in the luxury market. It started with ads that didn't even pimp the car itself, but instead the idea of luxury as a feeling. Infiniti is Nissan... an inspiring history of a country rising from the ashes of atomic war, and out-engineering or outperforming the world while remaining humble.

The M35 is so good I've owned two. The first one I sold, tested out some waters, but then came back. The interior makes a statement. I am confident of the quality because it's the same DNA in Nissans I used to own, beat up and loved. No way do I feel it is a clone like Hyundai. No way do I feel it is trying to be a budget BMW (I've owned those, too, and prefer Infiniti).

But this is all my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt.

i cross shopped the genesis sedan. it was nice, with lots of bells and whistles but
1. it handled like a sofa on wheels
2. does lack some brand cache, though that may not matter to you. i understand, it didn't mean much to me either.

-Welcome -
My opinion is that you are looking at two different segments here. The M35 is what i would call a luxury sports sedan. The Genesis is just a entry level luxury sedan. The M35 has the better looks of the two, and with that it carries a engine that has been battle tested. I don't know much about the 3.8 in the Genesis, so i can't give my $.02 on that.

But since you are asking, no I don't think the Genesis is a bad apple. I mean, this car did win the NACOTY award for 2009. And since then they are getting better and better with this model. Can't lie, I would seriously consider selling my M for a newer Genesis with their 5.0L engine. But the 09 just doesn't do it for me. Based alone on where you live and the winter weather conditions, if it were me, it would be a no brainer. I would go with the M35, for the added handling and stability.

Either way good luck to you. You'll love the Infiniti, just as you may love the Genesis. But since you are asking for opinions, the M35 gets my vote this time.

As someone who has a close friend who has the new Genesis and I have to tell you this. First the 3.8 is a nice engine as it's not just for Hyundai but also shares it with Mitsubishi and KIA. When the engine was revealed it was a "breakthrough" for the 3 being that it was a small engine with tons of power..So stated.

First let me say this...As other posters have said the Hyundai is exactly that...Look at it's history not very reliable or great. Granted in the past few years KIA/Hyundai have all made advancements in there looks and performance but at the end of the day they are still a KIA and Hyundai.

Second as I stated I have a close friend who went with the Genesis (due to the price)He later realized how unreliable and cheaply made it was. After the first 10 thousand miles the front grill started having major issues(I.E coming apart). The front headlights went out on him numerous times. The leather seats actually started to tear. The navigation in it was horrible always loosing signal. His so called "breakthrough" engine had major oil looks. Lets just say after 50k miles he brought it into a Infiniti dealer and only received a 14k trade in for a 3 year old car that he paid 33k for. It's sad really because according to KBB it was worth 17k but he didn't care he just wanted to get out of it.

I also drove the car and truthfully. It's not even a comparison at all I have owned everything from a G35 with 420whp to a M3 to and S4 and I have to say I was never a fan of the M I always felt it was big and slow. Yet after getting into mine these last 3 months for a steal of a price. I love it! It's smooth heavy yes but still accelerates amazingly. The comfort is just out the door for the year that it is..The electronics in it(I.E Nav,Bose system surround sound).Seem properly made while in the Genesis it was was all bulky and honestly ugly and the sad part it looks as if there trying to copy Infiniti (http://www.carbodydesign.com/archive/20 ... r-2-lg.jpg) vs http://www.yocar.com/blogs/general/uplo ... 793594.jpg

In the end it's all up to your taste but as some have stated comparing these two just doesn't happen.

Thanks for the replies, I enjoy reading how others perceive one car vs another. It seems every car has their issues, the Genesis audio problems vs the M's driver seat problem etc.

The M is in the lead for me at this point.

Keep in mind that the "x" in the M35x indicates AWD, so you don't have to settle for the genesis to get AWD. I live in the Colorado Mountains at 9,000 feet, and my 2009 M45X has done well in 2 feet of snow. I put the Bridgestone Blizzack snow tires on in the winter. Good luck with your search.

ok I think I have an idea, but what exactly is the seat track issue? Is that the same as when the bracket breaks and your seat rocks?

Sorry I missed this question earlier, the low mileage is because I bought the car in 2008 with 20k on it. Some older gentlemen that liked sporty sedans had it and didn't ever leave town. The mileage started to creep up lately because I have a 60 mile commute, part of the reason I want a different car.

You mentioned you owned 2 M35's did they both have driver seat issues? The rear tilt isn't working on the one I'm looking at. After reading about the rear support bar breakage/seat track issue and the cost to replace I'm a little weary. Dealer is calling me today to talk about the seat and options.

I promise I'll stop bumping this thread lol... but I just wanted to update the people that responded. The dealer called back this morning they will replace the seat bracket for me with the new part that prevents the problem (or so we heard in 2008 + models?)

I committed to buying it and should be ready for pick up Friday, but I won't be able to get it until next week as I'm out of town. Really wish I could have had it for this weekend's road and golf trip....

Thanks for the replies and help.

Nope. Not at all in my first M (bought with 0 miles) and my second (bought with (110,000 miles). There is some play in the track, and if it ever gets on my nerves I can solve it with a $75 repair.

If the one you're looking at has issues, keep looking. That one might've been owned by a 600 pound lady with anger issues who breaks little Asian seats for fun.

I have had my M45 going on a year now and the only real issue I have had was the driver seat, but I had a 03 G35 Sedan prior to this and it had the same issue but dealer covered it and I had a 08 Nissan Titan after the G and it was one of the first 08s sold in Houston and they told me that they replaced it with the update rail bc of its mfg date it had previous rail.. I will most likely never buy another new Nissan but would have no issues with buying a new Infiniti the customer service is worlds apart.. every issue I had with Titan I was told "excessive abuse will not warranty" but I have have heavily modified G and M that is always getting work done and they dont care they even encourage me in my mods

Congratulations on your purchase!!! I am jealous of the Premium package... I've never been able to find one at a reasonable price. Rear power seats are the ultimate!
