When I purchased this car a few months back, the service engine soon light was on. Former owner stated it was on because of custom exhaust system installed and having catalytic converter removed. I brought the car over to a mechanic shop who ran the computer and the CAT came up. He cleared the code but after a while of driving it came back up again. I also just learned that it will not pass NY state inspection due to this code that keeps appearing. Is there anything I can do without having to remove this exhaust and add factory CAT back to make this code disappear? I am assuming that its triggering this light to come on since it does not have the CAT installed anymore.

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

You can use spacers for your post-cat O2 sensors. You probably wouldn't pass a visual, but it might clear the code.

Yeah a simple fast solution would be to go to Autozone or Advance and get SPARK PLUG spacers. I think they are 19mm but do a quick search. These will "space" the O2 sensors away from the exhaust gases and should make them the light go away.

Any idea how much it would run to get this done from a Mechanic shops end?

Most mechanics won't do it since it's technically illegal.
You just unscrew the two back O2 sensors, screw these into the bungs, then put the O2 sensors into those.
Keep the battery unplugged while doing this and the code should be gone by the time you're done and everything is put back together.

I sent the seller of the spacers on ebay. I told him about the SES issues and he said that it depends on the tip of the sensors. If the tip is 1/2 inch it will work. He also said that if the tip is about the same size of the threads they wont work.

not too difficult if you can get the car on some jack stands or ramps high enough to work underneath.

if you look under the car, you can see the O2 sensors on each side of the the y-pipe.
spray some liquid wrench onto the bungs where the O2 sensors meet the y-pipe
disconnect your battery
unplug the sensors from their wire harness.
unscrew the O2 sensors from the y-pipe
screw in those spacers into the y-pipe
screw in the O2 sensors into the spacers
and reconnect the wire harness.
clean off any remaining liquid wrench on the parts that were sprayed
reconnect your battery and go for a drive

I haven't messed with the sensors on this car and can't confirm the size, but I do remember having to drill the holes a little wider on the spacers to fit a chevy truck to pass emissions until my friend could afford to replace the faulty cat converters.

Thanks for the help atlm35 much appreciated. To be on the safe side I will find someone more qualified then me to add the spacers. I know a local mechanic that works out of his home that can get it done for a few bucks. I will buy the spacers and take the chance to see if they work, only $9 so not a big deal.. Just to be sure there are only 2 sensors correct? 1 on each y-pipe?

looking again, there are longer one like these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/oxygen-sensor-o ... 4f&vxp=mtr

that should work, but then we come across clearance issues where the O2 sensor might hit the underbody of the car from being extended out so far.
you could also cap off the existing bungs and have an exhaust shop weld in new ones in a location that will let you install the setup... if you can find a shop that will touch it.

I just purchased the spacers on the first link you sent just to take a shot and see. Once it comes and I get it installed I will keep everyone posted to see if it fixed the SES light issue.
