Is it possible to upgrade the 06-08 Navigation to 09-10 specs?
Thanks!

No. 06-07 is DVD based. 08+ is HDD based. Two totally different systems, and no benefit from changing one out for the other. Just different media.

If you mean updating the maps, then yes, you just buy a new DVD (or go to the dealer to get your hard drive updated if you have an 08+).

Also, please fill in your location and car details in your profile so that we know what you have and your general geographic location to help you in the future. As always, please search.

How much should it cost to update a HDD on an 09 M35x at a dealership? Or any other placed recommended?

Thanks!

From what I remember seeing, it's not cheap. You have to pay for the software + the labor as opposed to just buying the DVD on the older cars for $120 or whatever it is. I'm thinking around $220 or so. And only the dealer can do it from what I remember.

I've been around a long time and although I've seen folks install NAV into non-NAV cars (since the car is pre-wired), I have not seen anyone upgrade the entire system from an existing NAV system. I'm assuming that plugging in an 08+ unit into a 06-07 car will be harder as the harnesses are different (different wiring for the HDD, etc.).

I've experienced both systems not much of a difference. Spend your money elsewhere. I don't even subscribe to XM nav on my 2009 never liked it.

Plus, with the DVD based system, if you're lucky one of the members on here will sell you last year's DVD for much cheaper, like Larz, who just sold his 2013 disc for $50!!!

Can't do that with the hard drive based system.

Excellent point sir! Now that I have an 09 M I will have to buy the updated NAV at NavTeq to avoid dealer mark-up, and then pay the dealer update my HD every time I want the latest version.

As for changing out the older NAV system for the newer HD system, I'm sure it could be done but I have no idea why anyone would bother. Changing the NAV system would likely mean removing the Bluetooth box in your glove box and that might mean you lose the bluetooth service in your car - plus you would have to install and re-wire the car to use the HD system. If I'm right, that means a bloody ton of rewiring and lots of risk.

While I agree that it would most likely be difficult and not necessarily worth the cost/effort/risk, I disagree that there would be no benefits. Quite frankly, if the HDD based NAV says "continuing to the road with incomplete map data, please use the destination flag and distance arrows to find your destination" or whatever the DVD based NAV says on most of my destinations (simply because I'm not usually using navigation to get to a metropolitan or major suburban area), I don't know why anyone would buy an Infiniti with a NAV system when a TOMTOM from 2006 could do better. It is understandable that a DVD NAV system has such a limitation due to technical constraints, but an HDD NAV system would simply have no excuse, even in 2008.

OEM Navigations SUCK (not just Infiniti). MPG (which I knew going in) and the fact that I can't replace the headunit in this car with a nice Kenwood, is the only two things I don't like about the car. My old Kenwood DNX-8120 was EPIC compared to the Infiniti OEM system.

Does 2006-08 have line guidance and real time traffic alert?

There is no real-time traffic info for those years even if you purchase the latest version disc. There is voice guidance and the maps are great with turn arrows and info such as distance to turn point, est arrival time at destination, automatic re-direction if you miss a turn, etc. I had my 07 for two years, used it to get to a gazillion places in different states and the maps were never wrong.
I also use XM for music and my 09 XM tuner has traffic, but the 07 satellite tuner is too old and cannot access the traffic system.
