I'm at about 16,500 mi. and the stock tires are almost gone. I'll be doing this in the spring. Just a few questions on tire options...

The OEM sizes are:

front 225/40-19rear 245/40-19

TireRack.com has the following optional sizes:

front 245/35-19rear 275/35-19

Is this the widest tire that will safely fit on the rear? I'd like to know what else would fit on the rim.

rear 275/30-19

I'm not a tire expert, so I'm not sure what the optional sizes would look like. I would like a wider rear tire, if possible. Can someone explain what the differences are between the two sets of tires? Thanks!!

The optional tire size will ride a little rougher because of the narrower sidewall. If you click on tire specs of a certain tire it give you the rim width range of a specific tire size. Then next to it is the suggested rim width. Tirerack is know to be pretty conservative when it comes to tire sizing.

I'd like to have a wider tire for the rear. I'm a little confused as to the /30 or /35 numbers. Which one is wider or taller? Also, will getting a different size screw up the VDC? Finally, what's the rim width of the G35 19's...I think it's 8.5?

BTW...574, that has got to be the nicest 240SX I've ever seen!

Ok, I'm doing some research...

The OEM size for the G35 with 19's is

F 225/40R 245/40

If you multiply 225 * .4 you get 90...which is the side-wall height, correct?

Now with another tire, say 255/35; multiply and you get 89.25, almost equal to the OEM side-wall height, but 30mm wider...Correct?

So, this new tire should stick out of the rim more than the OEM tire, but be almost identical to the side-wall height, thus not affecting the VDC???

Can the rim handle a tire that is 30mm wider?

I believe the 19s are staggered on the G35 but I could be wrong. You are correct with you measurements. Are you trying to put 255/35s all the way around? What size of tires are you looking to put in the back and front?

Yes, they are staggered. The front rim is 8" wide, and the rear is 8.5". I want the widest tire that will safely fit on my rims, especially for the rear. To keep from rubbing on the front, I'll keep the staggered setup.

I'm still trying to find the max 8.5" rims can go.

A 255/35 looks like its the widest tire you can safely put on in the rear. For the front 235/35 or 245/35 looks like the widest tire you can safely install. Also keep in mind with a 35 series tire you ride quality will be a little more harsh then the stock 40 series tires.

Interesting, TireRack.com has the optional sizes listed as 245/35 and 275/35, but the sidewall height is around 5mm shorter. If I use 255/35 and 285/35, I'll be around the stock sidewall height. I really want a wider tire in the rear, but a little extra tire off the rim to help stop curb rash.

I can't use the 245/35 and 275/35s??

I like to look of wider tires, better grip, plus the extra protection for curb rash.
