Ok it's getting close for the wifes car to have a "tuneup". Just what does a "tuneup" consist of today? It used to be plugs, points. rotor, wires, timing etc. but today, plugs? I thought about new plugs and running some seafoam in the tank vs taking it to the dealer for a "tuneup". Any thoughts? The car is an 05 Altima sedan, 2.5 auto.

Do Plugs, air filter, oil change, and advance the timing +2 via nissan ecu reflash... lol

Really there isn't much to do on that motor it tends to take care of itself. As for the sea foam, I have heard both good and bad reviews of it. The bad reviews were the pieces of carbon being dislodged from the tops of the pistons and valves, getting into the cylinders and wrecking the cylinder walls. Certainly be careful with that stuff, it can be horrific and end up costing you hundreds of dollars down the road....

I am going to pick up plugs today. The car has 90,000 miles on it so the plugs should make a difference.

I did plugs, seafoam, air filter and oil change and even my wife noticed the difference. I took it for a short spin when I finished and I could tell the difference. Idles smoother and there much better throttle response.

I went with NGK Iridium IX plugs. A little pricey but they will last for a long time. I went with NGK because they are original equipment. What was in the car were NGK platinum plugs.

I don't think seafoam is worth the risk. I read that a lot of people actually had more problems with their engines after using it.

Def do the spark plugs.
Serpentine belt
In cabin filter/ air filter in engine bay
check brake pads
check fluids for transmission/brake/etc
tie rods, shocks, struts

and if you haven't already been using it, use synthetic oil for oil changes. Helps protect the engine in the long run and worth the extra cost.
