------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had pulled a 0430 code earlier because the SES light was on, but it was still running fine. Now I figured I would try 91 octane to see if that made a difference, well it did, but not for the better. Now it misses, backfires, and the SES light is flashing. I am going to try and get the codes pulled again, am I looking at an emissions thing here, or is there any way to check the CATS? I put in new plugs about 4 months ago, so I doubt that is it. Any suggestions?

Update-just had the codes pulled, 0430 still there, along with 0300 ( I think which is misfire detected)Can a O2 sensor cause all this? Looks like it is on bank 2 (that is the passenger side, right?) any help is appreciated

Please dont be a useless member all the time.

Is 0430 the front or rear o2 sensor?

This is why I drive a Powerstroke-those people are much more helpful on that forum, guess I will take the Pathfinder in, can't get any help here

Sorry about that Mark, hes a tool.... I think youll find that this forum is nicer than most other forums... Unfortunately our truck sections are lacking as we dont have a full time moderator for this area

Anyway, 0430 is for the passenger side catylitic converter....

The rear o2 sensors basically just monitor the cats... however there is a nissan TSB about this

I know the codes arent the same, but it certainly seems as if this could be the cause. The key with codes like this is not necessarily to interprit them literally... You must diagnose AND THEN replace. The code basically gives you a place to start.

Thanks elwesso, appreciate the welcome. I did some testing last night, and from what I can tell the O2 sensors test out ok. And I took the premium fuel out, and put in 89 with ethenol, seems to run alot better. The light is still on, but it does not flash anymore. I priced out a converter 913.00!! Can a guy just gut those things out, or will that affect the 02 readings on the rear sensor? Seems funny that premium fuel makes it run like crap. Thanks for any info. Bank 2 is the passenger side, right? My book says code 0430 is for the left side, so I was assuming that is sitting in the car-kind of confused on that ...

Generally what I would do is look at the sensor readings and see whats going on. In my experience ive seen more o2 sensors fail than cats... Not to say its not possible.. id probably want to defer to NISTECH, but the rear o2 sensors are a common problem on the pathfinders.

If you gut the cat, it will definitely mess up the readings.. I really doubt the cat is to blame right here... The o2 sensors seem much more likely to me...

I think the ethanol is fixing the symptom, not the cause. My guess is that the o2 sensor is messed up but it doesnt think its messed up enough to throw a code for the o2 sensor itself.

Thanks for info, I will try the O2 sensor first, but I need to know which side is bank 2, the dealer tells me one thing, the book tells me the other-which side is bank 2?I did notice when I put the scanner on the vehicle, the oxygen sensors read low voltage on bank 2 versus bank 1 when it was on the open loop, and when it went to closed loop the rear O2 sensor was at 0.00 voltage, and then the front one was very low-can the rear sensor affect the front one that much? Thanks again for your input-

The rear sensor is basically just there for the tree huggers... it simply makes sure the cat is doing its job, however more often than not the sensor fails while the cat is fine.. I can only imagine how many people replaced their cats (BIG $$$) versus the sensor which was the more likely cause.

its POSSIBLE that you may have found problem to your missing problem..

Could you post up the voltages to all 4 o2 sensors, i think i might be confused a little.....

Boy, I cannot remember exactly, and I had borrowed the analyzer from the auto store-When the truck was warmed up, I remember that bank 1 was around .680 something volts (front and rear were close), and bank 2 was .000 on the back and .185 or something on the front. The bank 2 sensors would read some voltage when the engine was cold, but once it warmed up it would drop off to the numbers I posted. Also, it is hard starting when it is warm. Is that bank 2 the driver's side? Thanks

Bank 1= drivers sideBank 2=passenger side...

this is how it ALWAYS is!

0 - 0.3V + <-------> Approx. 0.6 - 1.0V is the correct range for the voltage. The left range is on the lean side, the other side is on the rich side.

From your voltages listed, your drivers side looks acceptable but your passenger side bank is not...

Personally I would start by replacing the rear o2 sensor and having the TSB done. I think we are dealing with different things entirely for the code and the engine misfiring... I want to treat them as seperate things at this point.

Thanks, I ordered the rear O2 sensor this morning, it will be here in a week, I will let you know the results as soon as I get it in-as far as the TSB, the dealer didn't mention anything about that when I called him-is this something they will even do on a 98?Thanks again....

Alright, this is getting weird-I was going to pick up the O2 sensor today, but the SES light has gone out ( it has been on steady since last August.) and now it runs perfect. Put on about 50 miles, not one hiccup. Possible carbon or something in the oxygen sensor? Hate to put in a 100.00 sensor if I don't need it-seems strange.

Well, now the light is back on-guess I will put the sensor in after all-this definitely makes me feel like it is not the Converter.....
