04 sedan shift knob

Does anyone know how to put the stock shifter back in? I took it out to change my cd player and now I can't get it to go back down. To remove it all i had too do was pull down on the grey decorative cover under the shift knob and remove the little silver clip and pull straight up on the shifter. Now im trying to push it straight down to reinstall the clip but it wont go down far enough i even tried banging with a hammer. I don't think that anything dropped out of the shifter but I have no idea what to do.

Uhhh...

DO NOT USE A HAMMER.

This should be a very simple thing. Your clip isn't in yet is it?put the square black piece on the rod, then slide the shift knob on(should drop on, no effort required), then put the metal clip in, then attach the black square plastic piece.

I tried that. When i put the knob on it doesn't go down far enough. So when i press the button to shift nothing happens. It won't move the shifter. I figured it should be simple. It came off easy.
