Im looking for a timing kit for my 04 maxima. Any suggestions on a good quality but not to pricy kit?

You're in luck, it's got a chain! Change the oil, and don't worry about it. :bigthumb:

Well I found out its not the chain that needs replacing. Its either the tensioner or the guide. It makes a horrable ratteling noise and I thought maybe the timing chain was worn out. But im thinking since im already going in there, i might as well change the chains.

When you say timing kit, you mean the parts to swap the timing chain, or adjustable cam gears to fiddle with intake/exhaust timing? I don't believe they make these for a VQ35 since it would take too much work to adjust them.

If you're swapping the chains, for the amount of work involved, use Nissan parts. One of the discount places like Courtesy Nissan sells oem parts cheap. I have worked on cars for more than 30 years, and cannot count the number of times where I got burned by aftermarket parts. You maybe save $50 but have $500 worth of pain, IMHO.

The VQ is a notorious for its rattly valvetrain noise, especially right after startup. A bad chain guide is certainly possible, but not likely. A number of older Nissan motors were known for having poorly designed chain guides, but the VQ35 isn't one of them. :)

Well im just gonna tear into it and see what the problem is. Ive had the car for about 2 yrs and the noise has just gotten horribly bad. Its not a constant noise either. I first thought it was a lifter noise, but I checked out the lifters and cams and it all checked out fine, so the timing chain is next in line. I am not looking for adjustable cam gears or any performance parts like that. I was just looking for the oem stuff, but like i said, im just gonna tear it open, inspect the parts and go from that. Hopefully my local dealer has the parts I need. Ive already called em on the tensioner and guide. They had both in stock and at suprisingly good prices considering they are coming from the dealer. The guide is $24.61and tensioner is $14.68.

It looks like an awfull amount of work. At least the parts are inexpensive. Keep us posted on how it goes.

Well it took 7 hrs with the help of a friend to get the cover off. Looks like the problem is the tensioner. i have about 3/4" slack in the timing chain because i can easily push the tensioner in by hand. and the timing chain cover has a spot on it where its being rubbed against. Does any1 know if the tensioner is hydraulic, cuz when I push it in, u can hear a squirting sound like its squirting oil out somewhere.
