My room-mates maxima is having a couple problems.

1- Engine light came on- p0171 / p0174 We're changing the filter monday and already cleaned the maf real good

2- His motor hesitates on start up. There is a clicking noise under the dash on the passanger side. He said he checked all the fuses but I wouldn't trust his judgement on that one.

What do you guys think this clinking noise is? Both problems started close to the same time. I don't know if they have something to do with each other but figured you guys would know.

The clicking noise could be coming from the HVAC mix door in the dash.

Yes, sorry, it's a motorized door in the dash that switches heater/air blower modes (like feet, dash, defrost). Sometimes they get stripped or jammed and will make rhythmic clicking noises because the motor is trying to switch modes but the door isn't moving.

And that would cause problems starting the car? The car turns over a couple more times before it actually starts up.

It definitely wouldn't be connected to the hard-start problem, no.

Your error codes are for both bank 1 and 2 running lean, so there's a fuel issue somewhere. I doubt it's injectors with both banks being affected and considering the age of the car.

Does the car run okay once it's started, or does it continue to hesitate?

The car runs smoothly, BUT it doesn't have the punch it had a week ago. It will pick up speed fairly well. But doesn't go like it did.

We know that the codes are fuel problems and I just found out he never replaced the filter-- so thats my guess for that. But it doesnt explain the clicking noise coming from the dash.
