i have an 04 frontier auto with a 3.3 with 52,000 miles on it. when i start it when its cold in the morning the valve train makes a loud tapping noise. it stops after a few seconds. i am running 5w30 synthetic motor oil. why is it doing this and does anyone else have this problem. what is the fix for it.

We discussed this before and still haven't come to a consensus.

Next time have someone start the truck while you have your head under the hood. My Xterra does this too, and it sounds like all the noise is coming from inside the distributor. It's wierd, and I haven't been able to pinpoint it.

It hasn't seemed to affect how the truck runs, and it doesn't use a drop of oil....

I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier with a 3.3 engine.

Check to see what oil filter you are using. I had that problem with lifter noise when cold. I use FRAM Tough Guard 7317, it has a rubber seal inside the cavity of filter that prevent the oil from returning back to the oil pan, this way the engine won't drain all the way.

It seemed to help me out with lifter noise when starting.

I found out by a freind that some engines come with this oil filter with this feature from factory in order to prevent this problem.

You might want to try and use an original nissan filter first, and then maybe later by a FRAM filter with this feature, I buy mine at Wal-Mart.

I'm using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 10W-30 (Texas Heat) with a Fram Tough Guard 7317 .

I hear a similar noise in my 04 Xterra w/ the same engine. I use and always used Mobil 1 10w30 w/ Mobil 1 filter and I don't drive it hard either. I also hear a similar sound of rattleing heat shields that some people have confused with a valve tap..you may want to check that also.
