04 altima transmission filter/oil change?

04 Altima w 35k. want/should change Transmission filter and oil. Can I do it myself? Should I use Nissan transmission oil or is the synthetic as good or better? Talked to a transmission repair shop and they said the transmission oil for foriegn cars are so car specific it is wise to stick with the vehicles mgf . product fluids. after first filte change, could I drain a few qts off every 10k and not have to do a full service every 30k?
