I have a 2003 VQ35DE block, with VQ35HR pstons, and I was wondering several things. How much piston to deck/head clearance is needed? is 0.02" too much or ok?
Ans, what material are the HR pistons, and what amount of thermal expansion is expected? I tried searching, and could not find anything really. So any help is much appreciated! :)

.02 is way way to tight, .04 is considered to be the safe quench area, you can run tighter on some engines but they are typically max effort all out drag engines. that tight on a street motor will see too much heat and likely cause preignition, as far as material im not aware of a difference between those and a 03, why wouldnt you just run 03 de pistons anyway's? theres no advantage to the hr pistons, that .3 compression ratio wont even get you an extra hp to the wheels(mayby 1 or 1.1 to the flywheel but then you will prob destroy the engine from the incorrect quench) the hr has a taller deck height and the pistons reflect that as well as the rods.
