Will it not go past 3500 at all or does it just lose a lot of power?

Do you have the stock exhaust manifold?

Have you loctited your butterfly screws?

Any other symptoms?

If a brake was sticking it'd probably be noticeable below 3500rpm.

If one of those screws got sucked in, you could need a new engine, you might just need some valve work, or you might get lucky and it'll just exit the exhaust valves.

Are you consuming oil more than normal?

no more oil consumption now but have had the engine replaced under the catalyst recall in 2005 the dealer told me the cai was the problem for the fouled mass air but ive always had one and ive had one on my old 2000 frontier and her 2004 frontier also i think ill take a look at the intake and valves this weekend . this morning taking the daughter to school it bogged down on the way but ran ok after layin into it on the hill climb home acts like this maybe once a week then goes back to screw up pattern

I have checked over all the engine components intake, butterfly plate, vac hoses but its still boggin down. put a snap on ethos on to graph a problem and it idles down to 250rpm every 30 seconds while setting still and put out a code of P0171 which said fuel sys too lean. its actin the same as with the old maf i may just need to get a new one instead of a NAPA one? any input?

OEM MAF would be a better choice. If the CAI has an oiled filter, oil may have been sucked onto the MAF.

Too rich code + bad idle, how's your water temp gauge look?
