Went to fill up the other day and I couldn't get the gas door open. Turns out I had been in the door and neglected to reconnect the switch. My bad.

But... where is the manual release? I had the hatch open, carpet up and wasn't seeing a thing? Went thru the owners manual and FSM but nary a word on it. Is there a retro fix for this mickey mouse setup? Like a stinkin' bottom feeder Corolla you have to manually release the lock on the gas door from inside before filling it up? On what was almost $40K in '03? I curse at this thing every time I have to fill it up, not because of how much it goes thru, but the amateurish gas door. I mean some manufacturers figured this out in the 70s.

Mike, is the issue that you couldn't open the door because of the unplugged wires? Can you at least see the off-white opening/locking mechanism.

Nissans didn't get manual releases, not in the way of a pull cable... but you can still manually open it, Look at the video for an example, and once you've located the plunger, I'm sure you can attach a string and have it poking into the trunk room area to pull in case of emergencies.

Start around the 5-minute mark.
