That is my usual reason for not worrying about Nav systems either.
My wife is another story ... I have had her call me and ask for help over the phone when she is lost - no Nav in her older car (and she does not want to get a portable one)!
She describes to me where she was at, where she was trying to get to, what streets she is passing and hopes that I can look it up on Google and guide her ... sigh ...

I always thought a nav system was gilding the lily too, just another thing to go wrong and cost more money to fix until one came standard in my '05 Q45 and I used it. The route guidance is nothing short of amazing. I used it a lot on my recent 7350 mile cross-country trip to find relatives and locations in strange cities. Trying it with just a map can be an exercise in frustration if you're not familiar with the vagaries of different areas and the way streets are numbered and laid out. My nav route guidance never failed to take me to exactly where I wanted to go, regardless of how convoluted the route may have been, and some were doozies. I consider it like the electric can opener; until you have one, you don't know how you got along without it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend getting a car with a nav system. Mine is DVD/GPS driven, and with the latest DVD, it's great, but the newer ones are hard drive/GPS based and are supposed to be even better.
Get one and don't look back (pun intended).
