Does your car have a smart key? If it does, you can't install a remote starter.

sir, Can you provide me with more details on your remote. Make, Model, Picture, etc.. would be appreciated. Now, when you all say "smart key" you mean the FOB corect, so is this remote unit separate from that, or....

I've made visits to audio/alarm shops around town and everyone of them seems to be stuck on stupid if you know what I mean. I never get a call back from anyone, so that say that they have no idea.

Yeah...That's news to me too. Every tech I've ever asked said it could not be done. Where did you get it done?

yeah a lot of techs also told me it couldnt be done till i went to this guy "Excellent Sound And Security" in brooklyn, ny. i dont know what type of system it is i know my remote says "Prestige" on it and there a litlle antenna behind my sun visor. I also know he needed two of my smart keys to do it.

hey guys it can be done. I am a 12 year veteren of the school of automotive aftermarket electronics.

i have yet to tackle mine yet, but have done 2 others, a few years ago.

i have always used DEI products. when installing into an m you need both keys as stated and a bypass module. it gets a little tricky with the automatic steering wheel doing some funny things, but little tricks of the trade help out.

I just had a basic remote starter installed on my 2006 M35 by the dealer. All the other places like Best Buy said they didn't have the required parts.

It was not cheap $600 and took them about 3 hrs to install and program all my smart keys.

The product works fine but shuts the car off after 10 minutes which I think is too short a time to melt frost or ice. Also, I'm not sure if it is possible to have the rear defroster turned on unless you a physically in the car.

so is there a separate aftermarket fob or did they intergrate the aftermarket starter into the oem remote.

They programmed the OEM smart key(s)/remote to start the car with a special sequence of button pushes.

I'd be careful with that one. The Smart Key module in the car recognizes the key whenever you come into range. In order to get a remote car starter to work, the Smart Key needs to be in range. To do that, you need a way to turn off the module, or it always looks like the key is in range and any thief can break in, turn on the car and drive off. According to an intaller I spoke with, there is a company (Audiovox I think, but he wouldn't say) that is making a bypass module so that you can install a remote on Nissan cars. They have a workaround that turns off the module with a remote toggle switch, but the install takes a day and the parts needed are created by them. At this point, they are only doing it experimentally and will wait for the bypass module to come out before they will guarantee the work.

I have been researching remote starts and there are several manufacturers that provide a unit that will work with the smart key. If I remember correctly it does require an additional relay to be installed with the unit. I have chosen the Commando EZ 2500 because of the good reviews and I do believe that they offer this feature. Fortunately my vehicle doesn't have the smart key security feature which, by the way, reduces the cost of your insurance rate. I would recommend you research the different brands on the internet as I did.

This can be done and pretty easily with the right module. The reason you need all keys there is you have to program the module to act as a key and in our cars the smart key system needs to know how many keys are present.

As far as the unit always being on and showing that the key is always there, if done properly this isn't an issue. On all remote starts there is an output wire that is only active during start/run time and you tie the module into this wire. Therefor the module is not powered up until you try to remote start. The module itself is housed away from the key cylinder and there is a signal wire that runs up to the cylinder. This signal wire is what makes it look like a key is in the ignition and allows the car to start.

All in all make sure that whoever does this knows what they are doing. DEI makes a "key in a box" piece but for this you lose a key. If this is the piece you decide to go with then you can purchase a programable standard key off ebay for like $15( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWD1V ), go to the dealer with all your other keys and have them programmed, then you have a spare key to use.

If you have them do the key in a box with that cheapo key, after you have it programmed by the dealer, I would recommend filing the key down so it cannot be used.

Hope this helps someone out!
