I think the info Lars gave was for a 2nd gen M45. (Non Y34) I think this feature is not available on the Y34. I'll take a lok in a few mins & let you know.
On another point, I'm confused when you say you have the key fob but no master key. The ignition will not start using the metal key that opens the door in the ignition. it sounds like the PO lost the "cut" key (it did come with one) and you're forced to use the fob for everything, right?
I'll explain your key system and then you tell me what you have...
In the fob there are normally two important items; one is the traditional (cut) key that can be used to open the door and trunk (you know where the trunk key hole is right?) That cut key will also fit in the ignition and turn it to the On position, but will not start the car....because of item #2. They key is stored in the fob and is use din case the battery in the fob is dead and you still need to get into the car. It also allows you to put the fob on your key chain when the key is also inserted into the fob.
#2 is the actual transponder that rests inside the key fob. If you were to change the battery in the fob and a little piece of black plastic fell out while you were not looking, the fob becomes useless other than to lock or unlock the car. Note to self...do not lose that little piece of black plastic. it's got a thickness of a 50 cent piece or a bit more and has sort of a trapezoidal shape with some variation. It rests inside the fob...loosely, and is ready to fall out at any moment when the fob is opened. other note to self, the transponder is not available for purchase seperately and requires a new fob (over $400).
The probem you have (it sounds) is that the cut key is missing. You can get a blank cut at a dealer for cheap or look on e-bay for a blank being sold and a dealer or competent lock smith should be able to cut one for you. Don't bother having a hardware store key cut as a spare. They do not work. Tried it.
When you get this sorted, get a new battery & super glue the transponder in the fob...
