I've got a 2003 VQ35DE with 204K miles. Usually cranks fairly normal when cold, but when warm, it fast cranks. Many times it will run for a few seconds and cut off. Then I crank again (fast crank) and after about 3 tries, it will run (normal). Again, I'm getting no codes. Any ideas?

Just about all Nissan ECM's get their ignition signal from the crank sensor, and when they "lie" to the ECM without flatlining you often won't get codes. It's also not uncommon for them to misbehave with temperature. You can check it with a streaming scanner, the engine speed should show 200+ RPM's steady while cranking. If the reading is intermittently flatlined or bouncing all over when the car misbehaves, you found your culprit.

OK, well I have replaced the CPS several times, but usually it won't start when it fails. I keep a spare in the center console (LOL.) I will replace it.

Thanks! I will report back next week the results.

Sounds like a mechanical issue between the starter and ring gear. Maybe the starter piston is not fully extending?
