2003 Altima 2.5 with 65k.Bought used a couple of years ago. Ever since we have owned the car we have had to add oil on a regular basis. Nothing too much...a quart every month or 2...just figured it was a high use vehicle that used to be a rental.

Anyway...the last 6 months the oil use has skyrocketed to sometimes 3 quarts in 2 weeks...depending on how much it is driven.Smoke is noted out the exhaust pipe. No leaks anywhere.

Not sure if it is valve seals or piston rings. Crank position sensor and cam position sensor were replaced and the vehicle taken in to Nissan for all the recalls including reprogramming the ECM.

Engine performance is down. Not sure what kind of money I am looking at having to spend to fix this car. Anyone have any experience in this field who can give me some info on what I might look at having to spend to fix this problem.I mean it can only be two things....valve seals or piston rings.... right??

Experience please.

Thanks !!!

Wow !! Kind of shocked that no one has any experience with the issue I inquired about. Anyway...if anyone wants to see 2 photos I took of the car smoking just email me and I will reply with the 2 pics.BTW, the car is at a local shop right not getting checked out.

Take it to a dealer and have them check the oil consumption. There is a recall out there for oil consumption on the 2.5 Altima.

I have a wife and kids and cannot afford the troubles this car has presented me.I went out and bought a 2007 Honda Accord. Problem solved.

Thanks for everyone's help. I have no need to get on this forum anymore since we no longer own an Altima.

I just want to thank everyone for all the help I have recieved over the time I have been on here posting. This website is a TREMENDOUS resource. Thanks again.

Take care all !!

cblazer,I like your thinking. I had a 2.5 S 2002 that was high mileage, out of warranty and kept giving me problems. I traded it in today. I am not a fan of the QR25DE motor.

I know this is a mute point, but did you ever have to replace the pre-cat coming off the header? My wife's Altima was on its 3rd cat. There are problems with the QR motor and the pre-cats coming apart and scoring the cylinder walls. If it was blowing smoke, did it consume coolant as well?bud

We never replaced the part you are talking about. I did notice a couple of weeks ago that I needed to add coolant as the reservoir was almost empty however I did not add any yet nor did I take the radiator cap off while cold to see how low it actually was. The cars temp was fine. I was planning on addressing that issue if we kept the vehicle but I tell you with kids in the picture I just saw that vehicle as a threat to my families health and welfare and got rid of it.
