If the stinkification occurs only when you run the AC, then the problem may not be the filter. Try turning on the ventilation without the AC (heat, for example), and see if it still smells.
AC units can cause smell in cars because the condensation builds up and allows mold and other things to grow, causing the stink. The good news is that the easiest fix I've found is one or even two cans of Lysol disinfectant. You turn on the AC on high and stand outside the car (the car should not be moving, note). Spray the Lysol into the air inlet at the base of the windshield.
