03-04 Q45 engine into a 91 Q45

I have a chance to get a 91 Q45 for very little $$. I would like to turn it into a fast daily driver. The 03-04 engines had another 50 HP and I can get one with 10k miles on it for a low price. The extra HP, a stripped interior and some race seats would suit me nicely.

Is this an easy upgrade? Anyone tried it? Are the blocks the same?I am a fairly accomplished car guy. I know I need the complete engine, exhaust manifolds, computer, trans, fuel pump assembly etc.

No one that I know of has tried it, but dont let that stop you.....

Ive thought about swapping in a VK45, or the possibilities thereof... The VK and VH are VERY different engines...

They are pretty different engines, different series (VH to VK) size approx the same with the VK lighter by quite a bit.

Horsepower isnt everything and torque really matters in most driving situations. The power difference is slight as some of our leading members have found, a well running VH45DE can be brought to 337 lbft of torque vs the newer VK45de at 333lbsft of torque ( w/o chip I dont know if one exists for VK yet).

they are both 32 valve, same volume 4.5L, potential is about the same ,the only thing you could gain would be a weight advantage for the VK being lighter.

This weight advatange would come at an incredible price, tons of parts, labor and technological risk.

it would be much simpler and cheaper to just get a supercharger for your VH45de.

There are threads on this here on the board of chargers system ready to go.

EDIT: Great idea for Monster Garage

Agreed... You could have a nice 6-10psi supercharger, and a spare engine for good measure before you could get halfway to putting in a VK

The coolness factor would be very high and you would almost be guaranteed making "Featured NICO Ride" for the month you entered it.

But performancewise better solutions exist for less money.

Thanks for the tips! I will drop that idea and look into forced induction.

MotorHead:

Also a well running 91 is a pretty quick car to begin with.

Buy a JWT chip from Stillen for it and maybe the JWT TCU as well, add a 4.08 rear diff from our NICO group buy (thats ongoing right now) and you have a <quick> car for maybe a 2.5k cost on top of purchase, possibly quicker than a 2k3 Q45.

And with the many thousands you saved, you can get the guides done, transmission cooler/transmission flush, tons of maintenace that the last guy probably didnt do.maybe even a bulletproof level ten performance transmission,,

Possibilities are endless ..

(And they are all covered in detail on this forum, I am sure another member will link you if you dont find them.)

I admire your efforts, but I would have to agree with others that the 90-95 Q can give you the peformance that you are looking for...definetly for a lot less $$ and we have all the bugs worked out of our performance mods.

Check out all the other posts...but we have members claim very low 14 sec 1/4 mile ET's with about $2,500 in mods ( 4.08 rearend, JWT ECU & TCU).

I and a couple others are currently moving very fast to build an extremely fast naturally aspirated Q.

I am determined to break the 14 ET barrier being 100% naturally aspirated (no turbos, SC, or spray) and maintain reliability as this is my daily driver. I know others are out there saying it can't be done, but I am going to give it every innovation possible to get there.

The SC option for you would turn your car into a beast. Check out our member, AGM, in Australia who has SC his Q....it sounds amazing the power this thing is putting down.

Other mods available are a carbon fiber driveshaft and LevelTen transmission with higher stall. We have a couple other mods in the works that look promising. If you want...you can wait about 3 months and I will have my car all done and then you can follow in my footsteps if you like or venture out on your own with some other mods as we always welcome new ideas and talent.

Hey Fred.....LOL!!! I can't believe we just wrote the exact same things...including the $2,500 estimate. That is really scary dude....I must have finally become a NICO guy like the rest of you all and start thinking like you all. I guess initiation is over.

I guess it takes some of us longer than others to find the "Q owners" way home to where all the Q guys hang out. I can't believe that it has taken me this long, since 1998 when I bought the car, to finally do what I have always wanted to do to the car with all the mods.

You want to strip the interior of a Q45? Thats the only reason i'd buy a Q45 is because of the awesome interior.
