02 starting issue

My 02 has developed a strange habit just recently. When I turn the key to start, the starter doesn't engage. It acts like the battery is dead, although all the accessories come on. If I pump the brake pedal a few times and turn the key off/on a few times, it roars to life as if nothing is wrong. Starter goes with no hesitation or slowness like you might expect if the battery was indeed low. I don't understand what the brake has to do with anything because I don't think there is a brake pedal interlock like some cars have.

Any ideas??
