I'm looking at an '02 QX4 with a 132k miles. It's 4wd with heated seats and tow package. Its seems to be well cared for and in impeccable condition (no rips, no rust, no paint issues etc.)

The only thing wrong with it is the stereo (no navigation). He said it wasn't working and it was draining the battery so he disconnected it.

It's a dealer and he wants $6350. I don't see them in this condition very often but I still feel it's a bit steep. Opinions are greatly appreciated.

Not sure if it helps, but for comparison, I just paid $6500 for an 03 QX4 in near perfect condition with 83K - no 4wd or heated seats though.

Well, if you go by KBB the suggested retail price is around $4500

NADA is about $5500. I think that's the most I'd pay for it since it's so nice. I think it would have to have lower miles to fetch anything higher. The stereo could be a pain too.

That seems expensive .... I sold my 02 about 5 years ago for less. It so long ago I forget the miles and the price :) It was around 135k and I think 4500.

Was it in excellent condition for that price? A private seller will always be cheaper. That's ideally what I'm looking for but the right one hasn't came along yet.

Seems steep to me, especially with no stereo. Tell him you wont pay more than $5k because you'll need to have a new stereo put in and its possible a new stereo wont work with the bose speakers very well, something about impedance matching... Be sure to check for the front strut rust issue and have a look underneath for bad rust.

Mine was in great shape -- it had a slight scuff on the rear bumper. My 02 was a Pathfinder LE -- so all the stuff in a Q except the headlights. LSD/ heated leather/ climate control/ Bose/ electric transfer. You can buy a Cayenne with that miles today for 10k.

One other factor maybe is that I live in CA. It seems like everything is marked up out here compared to back east. The flip side is that rust is a non issue, which is a big deal with these cars.

I wish it were that easy. I've been looking for almost a year for something that is VERY nice. It's getting to be slim pickins. You honestly can't get a nice QX4 with <130k miles for $3000. If you do find one, look underneath it and it will be plagued with rust.

There's getting to be not many nice survivors left folks. My search continues.

I can't tell you how many "VERY nice" QX4's and Pathfinders I've encountered that needed tons of work. Rear main seal comes to mind, among all the other standard issues. As for rust, there are plenty of great, rust-free R50's out there, particularly out west.

I'd take a non-leaking car with higher miles and all its records showing everything done over a cream puff with a fresh clear coat spray and q-tip detail. A car of this vintage appearing to be totally mint is a warning sign to me. Maybe I'm crazy, but that's my observation.

Some owners get their cars over the humps as they encounter them and others let things fester until it's beyond the point of no return and they have to get rid of it. I find more of the latter at high prices. But boy does the paint shine and the leather look great!

I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds. That's why I'm still looking.

You can look at it a few different ways. A car this old and in great condition makes me think that if the previous owner cared enough to keep his car clean and unblemished, he probably kept up with the maintenance/repairs as well.

I live in CA and all the rust free beauties are here. It's amazing the difference in asking price between East and West coast. Probably for a reason.

You should never start a sentence with a conjunction like "but."

If you are not afraid of a little mechanic work and maybe traveling out of state to get one, you could get an LE 4x4 with leather and all the goodies cheap. I got mine for 1200 and have put on it like 100 in parts, one of which was the rear main seal. Of course I did all the work myself. But I got to drop the pan and a lot of the front gear and got to see and know how this engine was internally. WIth 5000 dollars I would buy something much newer and honestly, much easier to do maintenance than a QX4. For example, my Silverado is a 2002 and it is so easy to maintain and do any type of work. The pathfinder is a nightmare compared to the Silv maintenance wise.

Thanks QCtech for the suggestion. I'm pretty much stuck on a QX4. I had one for 10 years and it was the best car I ever owned. With that said, it probably holds some sentimental value as well.

There are a couple of QX4s for sale, 2002, and 2003, on bay area Craigslist. They look to be in nice shape, and have under 100k miles on them. $4200 and $4900 asking prices. I'm thinking about getting one and selling my wife's 2001 QX4 with 224k miles on it. Nothing wrong with the 2001 except scratches from brush during our limited off road use and driver seat showing some wear, and a couple of very small oil leaks, but it would be nice to have one less worn. One with ~100k miles would likely be the last vehicle she needs ever -- and I already know how to work on it.

Thanks Attofarad. I'm already aware of those vehicles. The one for $4900 has a salvage title with the wrong front bumper on it. I tried contacting the guy selling the '03 multiple times and he doesn't respond (seems to be common thing around here). It seems like a shady deal anyways, crappy pictures and such.

I got my feelers out on the whole west coast as well as TX, CO, and AZ. Not desperate enough yet to consider FL but getting there :)
