Drained antifreeze from bottom of radiator (removed appx 1 gallon). Replaced .6 gallons into top of radiator (to full). Did remove air bleed cap near the firewall when topping off fluid (cap on a small steel riser tube that runs across the backside of the engine). Started engine, let it warm up (R cap off). Can't get heat, I assume there's an airlock in the heater core, but cannot figure out how to correct it without disconnecting the heater hoses at the firewall which I would prefer not to do. What am I doing wrong here? Service manual offers no signficant guidance. Thanks.

The FSM seems pretty detailed on pages MA-15 and MA-16. From a quick glance, it appears that there are two bleeder screws, but they're not on a metal riser as you mentioned... so I'm not sure.

I believe the 2 plugs you are viewing are the block drain plugs. Those are for completely draining the cooling system. The airbleed appears to be located near the firewall and I think is a metal tube rising up from a hard tube running behind the motor.

After letting the system cool down overnight and adding additional coolant to the reservoir all is well. The heater throws heat, so the manual was right again. All I needed was some patience.

Thanks for the help.
