I can't say that I've touched it in over 6 months. Today was a cool day with bright sunshine. Went to open the moon roof for a little more ventilation and it was completely dead. No whirring or grunting, just dead in both directions.

Any quick suggestions before I dig into the manual?

Start by replacing the $.69-1.09 fuse

Does anyone have any ideas on how to open a closed moon roof to gain access to the motor assembly?

If not power, check the switch. Time for the DVM.

Any maintenance? Cleaning and lubricating tracks?

Problem is gaining access to the switch and motor assembly. Do I have to drop the interior ceiling panel to gain access?

Motor and switch assembly is accessed by removing map lights with their surrounding trim- it is just held in place with spring clips- a small screwdriver/butter knife wedged between trim and surrounding surface will separate the 2 enough to use your fingers to pull assembly free.Motor will then be staring you in the face.

you need to download the FSM field service manual. It will walk you thru the diagnostics and how to access with exploded diagrams.
very user friendly

I finally found some time to troubleshoot the inop sunroof on the '02 Q45. I downloaded the RF section of the manual. Since I don't have a Consult II, I troubleshot per page RF-15.

The only trouble I had getting access to the motor assembly was that there was an unmentioned screw inside of the sunglass holder. Luckily, I spotted it before applied #8 hand torque and yank.

I have voltage on pin 1 and ground on pin 8. The sunroof switch connector checked out.

The only external thing I could find wrong was the 45 sec after ignition switch turn off signal on pin 6 was not present. It was supposed to read 12 volts after the key is removed.

According to the FSM this indicates a defective motor assembly. There were four lines of printing on the motor itself:

91295 AR010
ASMD
833100-3180
12v 4c

Anyone know a good source for a salvaged unit?

Hopefully this post is not to late ( I just joined the site), but I had a problem with my sunroof similar to yours. The dealer told me all I had to do was disconnect my battery for 10-15 minutes and the sunroof would reset it self and it worked. This occurs after the car may have lost power (battery drain).
It worked for me hopefully it may work for you as well.

Well, it was worth a try, but no help.

All it did was erase my radio presets, and disable the seat pullback and steering wheel pull up when removing the key. It did this once before, I'll have to pull out owner's manual to reset it.

You haven't said if you were able to get the sunroof closed. After removing the dome light there should be a place to put a 5mm hex bit and manually crank the roof shut. I took a pic of my spare. It should be similar to yours.

Here's a person parting out a 2002 in the Sacramento area.

Thanks for the heads up. Fortunately, the motor drive assy failed with the sunroof closed.

I've had the drive assy out already just to verify it wasn't a worn or hung up brush.

I'm just taking a stab in the dark here because I don't know how the 02 operates but in the G50 the same switch controls the tilt up/down and the retract. If the sunroof is tilted up just a fraction of an inch it won't retract. I thought mine was broken for a couple of days a while back until I checked the tilt position and fully closed it.

Double checked the drive assembly for a manual drive and found none. The '02 Q has two switches, each with 5 positions, just like the one touch power windows switch. One switch retracts the sunroof, the other switch tilts it. If the sunroof is tilted, the retract switch is deactivated, samo-samo for the tilt switch when the sunroof is retracted.

All of the circuitry, position encoder and limit switch is located in a black plastic box and is an intergral part of the motor assembly. My wife's G25 works just like yours goody90q45.

Here's a local salvage yard that just posted a 2002 for parts. The sunroof motor isn't listed but give them a call.
